Extended Idle In Reverse, 600IQ Polaris Clean Fire

Howdy All,

This may be a dumb question but I've always wondered this since the PERC reverse came around. I have a 2010 Polaris IQ Tour with the 600 Clean Fire 2 stroke. Is it ok to let the sled idle in reverse for a few minutes? Or even back up for a ways if need be? I don't, I just run in reverse to back out of the trailer or back up to turn around.
I guess my main question is how does the oil pump and water pump work when the engine is running backwards? I thought the pumps were pretty much directional, , i.e they pump when the engine is running in it's normal direction.

Thanks in advance for the info.

Well, I generally don't let it idle in reverse very long. I read on the web, that the oil pump doesn't work in reverse. Whether that is true or not, I haven't a clue. I've never had to dig into the oil pump for any reason, so I don't really know exactly how it works. I am not worried about backing up for a ways, I think you'd have to back up a LONG ways to really do any damage, probably the same with idling. But I've always just made it a habit to get it spinning back forward when done backing up.

Maybe someone will know for sure.
