Booon - Yeah, ya gotta be careful... after over a year and a half of job searching, and over 500 applications submitted, the only way you get in is by applying to the job posting. The majority of companies won't even look at your resume if you send it regular mail! And they won't take your calls. If you don't have a way in through a networking connection - all you have is your online resume and their job postings. If I can't find the company on the internet and get complete details about it, I don't respond to their job posting or the email should I get one.
BUT I do get your point, you must be careful of what you put out there and you have to be careful who you respond to. I did get a call from a guy in DT Mpls who wanted me to come for an interview, I just didn't feel good about it. In the end I didn't go and when I called to tell him I wasn't coming - the phone number he gave me was no good. I then emailed him and he never responded.
Unfortunately, your name, address and phone numbers and email addresses are pretty much public knowledge. You have to pay extra to have your phone number unlisted. If at any time you are in court for any reason, it's public knowledge - name, address, age...
You have to be careful - you have to keep an eye on what your kids are putting out there. I remember an old rule - if you can't show your grandma, don't put it out there!
