I am thinking about making a camping trip to the grand haven area for the fourth as my wife has family there. My question is....Are you allowed to take firewood over the Mackinac bridge? ........Thanks!!!

I don't think so, we went in 2007 and they made us dump our firewood in a dumpster south of the bridge. But firewood is cheep in the UP $3 for a wheel barrow load where we stayed. It would have been $20 in Indiana. Have fun the UP is just as pretty in the summer as it is the winter.

I think the new rules are, you can transport thoughout the lower or upper but nothing across the bridge. Check the Mi DNR site. They used to have the rules posted.

You will want to get your reservation in ASAP for the State Park in Grand Haven. Go to the DNR web site to do this. Grand Haven State Park is always full. Need reservations in 6 months to the day to get in there. I keep my boat just up the river from there. Fireworks are really good. No firewood over the bridge. I seen a dumpster there for firewood disposal going up but not one going south. probable use the same dumpster. If full try Hoffmaster State Park. If that don't work Coast Guard Festival is a good time too! Good luck with reservations.

NO firewood over the bridge. Primarily to prevent the transfer of eggs and larva of EAB (emerald ash borer), but NOT just EAB...but other diseases and nasty stuff can be spread around too.

You would feel like a heal if you introduced something by doing so, and so it is best to simply spend a few more dollars and buy the wood locally.

Your wallet will hurt some, but you will rest better knowing you didn't contribute to thousands or millions of trees being infected or killed eh?

Just don't do it!!

BTW you can NOT take any ash into any state campgrounds....not sure why since they have now created this mess, might as well burn as much as you can...there are whole forests in SE Michigan that are leafless and deader than heck...it is truly a sad thing to witness. For the most part this was all preventable had we taken the proper precautions. we didn't and now we live with what has happened to a single species of trees.

I agree with the above post however. I do cross the bridge every weekend and I dont believe I have ever seen signage warning southbound travelers that wood is not allowed across [many signs northbound] maybee the wood in the u.p. is much "more pure" than the nasty pest infested wood downstate?? just a thought

The Mac bridge is not a dividing line for wood transport. DNR recommends it not be moved from county to county statewide. Its all on DNR website if you want the facts of do's and donts.

Pulled up next to a guy at the tollbooth this fall heading South with a trailer load of firewood. Is it just a Northbound issue?
