First family trip suggestions.

I'm taking the family North to Wisconsin over MLK weekend (Jan 15-18). This is our first real trip up north so I'm looking for some trip information. It will be two adults and two kids 10 & 13. We want some good trail riding, but I'm sure the kids won't be able to handle the long riding days that I'd like, so a trail with some frequent stops. If anyone has any suggestions as to where to stay, what trails to hit, and any other tips I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Lotta great places. I tell ya, you probably can't go wrong headin up to Eagle River, St.Germain area. Lots of stops with great places to eat, and things to do. Some of the hotels up there have indoor pools also. Lots of different trails to choose from too.
I also like to go over to the Hayward, and Cable area. Great family area for sure. Have fun!

I have been taking my family (2 adults and 2 daughters now 15 and 17) up to: http://www.sunriselodge.com up in Land O Lakes for several years now.

It is great family resort along the trail system that you can access the UP system easy from as well as hit the Northern Wi trails. Getting ideas of things to do in the area is easy if the kids get bored just ask.

We drive into Eagle River to shop and catch a movie in the old movie house, you can go sledding near Iron Mtn or over in Conover if they don't want to snowmobile just ask Phil at Sunrise.

Tell him Dan W. told you about the place.

St. Gemain for family trip is great

We have been going for years to St. Germain for our family trips. We have 3 families that go, 6 kids/6 adults. We have been staying with Hillers Pine Haven(Mark Hiller), he has alot of cottages and beautiful vacation homes. St. Germain is a nice centrally located spot, you can go south to Minoqua, or north to Boulder Junction, any direction is good when you have the kids. Plenty of places to stop along the way.

First family trip suggestions.

You had me going there for just a second with that title... I thought the Obamas were getting bored with Hawaii already! {smile}

St.Germain is the place to go, The Rustic Manor or the Heartside are two motels with indoor pools and reasonable rates for a mid week stay. The trails are well taken care of, and offer a great varity of riding, you can ride all day and never be more then ten miles from your motel. Lots of great places to eat.

You will want to stay away from the Eagle River area that weekend. That is the weekend of the snowmobile races. Lots of snowmobile traffic in that area that weekend. If you want to have a good and safe experience for your family, that would be my suggestion. Minocqua is a great area. The area around Park Falls is also a nice riding area.

Have a fun and safe trip!

I'd say stay in/around Hayward. Tons of places to stop, eat, drink, etc....There will be plenty of traffic that weekend, but just stay to the right, remember to look behind you every once in a while to let people pass. With so many places to stop, nobody gets cold, nobody pees in the woods (unless they want to).

special k, ha, some times you just gotta go!
eltrain1984, just remember to keep mom, and the kids warm, and you'll have a great trip.
Good luck, and have fun!

Catalac, you nailed it with "keep mom warm". I'm Mom's not happy, no one's happy!

Snowtiger, thanks for the tip about the Eagle River race.

Saint Germain. As stated above, a ton of trails with small to larger loops and never be too far away. Great lodging and restaurant choices. That is a busy weekend anywhere you go, but they do a great job of grooming and is less crowded than E.R and Minocqua.

I'm telling you try http://www.sunriselodge.com From there you can go north into the UP without hitting all the traffic heading south to the races in Eagle River. I'll be up there the week after your trip, great food and friendly hosts. The lodge has a basement full of games for the kids and if you like ice fishing it's right on LVD a class A muskie lake.

Over the years we have towed the kids around the lodge grounds and lake, gone ice skating right there, sledded in Conover about 5mins away and for an even bigger hill Phil at Sunrise can tell you how to get to a really fun sledding hill with a tow rope over in Iron Mtn about 20-30min away. You won't be disapointed.

I'm with Wags... Grew up sleddin in the Eagle River/St. Germain area. Way too much traffic and insanity. If it's your first time out go north my friend. If Sunrise is full go to the Gateway in Land O. If your renting Ramesh's is right across the street. From there ride north. Plenty of wide open trails without the insanity of the Eagle River area. They have great food, open trails, Casino's, etc... If you get the itch to ice fish, go a block south of Sunrise to Starlite Landing, Kurt will take you out for the ride of your life snaggin northerns and wallies. In fact, I own a home in Three Lake just south of Eagel River and stay in Land O when I ride. Much safer. They've already had a death in 3 Lakes.

Wags - Too funny... I've known them for a long time, nice folks, but definately a unique family unit. Curt and his dead bar, Rhonda and her animals of the week, and then Mom and Dad... Always an interesting visit. However, they sure can fish... Curt and I pulled a 32 inch Wally out of the ice one year.
