First time in Watersmeet area!

Wife and I have ridden the Hancock to Copper Harbor run a few times but looking for a different place to try out so we rented a cabin at Running Bear Resort. We are going to spend one (of our 3) days riding just looking at the waterfalls and scenery, but looking to get some ideas for the other two days rides. Sure, we could just wander but since it's our first time in this area, I would like to get some ideas. Not looking for scenery as much as destinations or just nice rides...ideas?

Easy peasy ask owners Mike and Linda. You can ride anywhere from Runningbear Resort in Paulding. Groomed trail Loops, FRs , long hauls , short trips and of course Bond Falls. Get yourself a map and enjoy. Mike and Linda are good people just ask and they’ll set you up.

I have some recommendations for you. From trail 2, get on 3 north a few miles east of Watersmeet. Take 150, which is a short but awesome run, to 107 north, also a great trail. Trail 107 will take you to the intersection of trail 8, an old rail road grade, where there are a couple of options to stop. Take trail 8 east to Sidnaw where you can get gas and stop there also. From there, take trail 109 north, which is currently my favorite trail up there, to trail 12 towards Mass City. Stop at the Rousseau Bar, neat old place. Not sure how many miles you want to put on a day, but while you are up there, you should try to take the 13 loop from Greenland to Twin Lakes. It is 36 miles, but is an awesome trail when groomed.

Another day I would take trail 2 west to trail 13 N and stop at the Root Cellar on Lake Gogebic or any number of places on and around that lake. Great area! Continue on 13 north, or you can take the lake, up to Bergland. Take trail 1 N to Silver City and then all the way to Lake of the Clouds. Well worth the time to see if you haven't already. When you come back down from Lake of the Clouds, take trail 11 south, another great trail. It is a 2 lane asphalt road in the summer that is shut down in the winter and groomed wide. Take trail 102 south to Bergland and hit the Hoop 'N Holler. Say hi to George, the owner. :) From there you can chose your way back home. May want to take the lake to save some time or take trail 1 south to trail 100 and back over to 13 and down to trail 2 and home.

I think you will be very happy with both of these routes and it covers the best trails up there. If you need a great place for dinner, try J.W.'s BBQ and Brew in Bergland, awesome food! If I can help any further, let me know. I've been going up to that area since 1993 so I know the area well.

Thanks for the detailed routes! Time to hit the maps and look them over!

Something you didn’t mention is what type of miles do you like to ride, that could dictate your route also. Lake of the clouds is a great ride but depending on route taken it could be a long day also weekdays compared to weekend will make a difference in trail conditions. Also agree with whitedust ask Mike and Linda they should be able to give you good info also.

Agreed with that! We can put on 150 pretty easily and would have to push the wife a bit after that. Going during the week (riding Mon-Thurs) trying to avoid the big crowds.

You should be able to make some nice loops then. Tuesday and Wednesday are usually have the least amount of traffic from what I’ve been observing, have fun be safe.

How is 8 west from 3? That looks like it may save to time from Berglund on the return trip...so I guess that would be 8 east to 3 hahaha

It's normally well groomed but it is a rail grade, which is great for getting somewhere fast, but I don't care for rail grades more than a few miles. Could be a good option for you.

8W from 3 should be good. Been on it quite a few times this season. It was smooth with rocks clanking. The system snow should have fixed the low snow. Be careful around the shared 8 & 3 section. Plenty of deer on the trail. Almost guaranteed around sundown.
