Looking to find out "must stops" and "must see's" for the area. This is our first trip to the Watersmeet area, and we are looking to support those establishments that contribute to the sport of snowmobiling. Any thoughts on good places to stop to eat, have a beverage, etc.. would be appreciated. Also things to see (and to avoid) would be good. Thanks again

All of the above are great suggestions, particularly Trail 107 up to Kenton where you can stop at Hoppy's. Hoppy's is VERY supportive of snowmobiling and the trails. Another suggestion is to make a trip up Trail 3 to the Mosquito Inn in Toivola. Great food and friendly atmosphere. Another big trail supporter.

Casinos?? Do they really contribute to the sport of snowmobiling? Just asking.

Have you ever been to the Casino? Have you ever actually looked in the parking lot? How many sleds and trailers they have lined up? I would say yes……they support the sport with a place to stay……..a fuel station right next door…..a place to spend the night……a bar and restaurant……..with entertainment and a swimming pool and workout area….. all so people can base out of that location and ride hundreds of miles of trails…..and probably a bit financial support somewhere in the mix? Just my observation……

Just got back from a week in the Watersmeet area. The trails were great. One loop I would suggest is Trail 2 east towards Eagle River. You can run the extra 6 miles into Eagle River (from the junction of trail 15) if you want to warm up and back track but we decided to head North on trail 15 towards Kenton & Sidnaw. We ran into Sidnaw and got gas and some lunch then over to Kenton to Hoppy's Bar and then Trail 107 back towards Watersmeet. I think it was around 110 miles round trip and everyone of those miles was excellent conditions.
Another great run was up to Baraga and then over towards Big Bay, but we had to back pack that night and stayed in Ishpeming to make that happen since we don't like to ride much over 150 miles a day or so. Another neat thing to see is between Bruce Crossing and Kenton on Trail 8 there's a fairly long bridge and you cans stop there and there is a pretty impressive waterfall right below it. Not sure of the name of those falls but you can't miss it if you stop on the only long bridge between those two towns. At any rate, I've spent three weeks in the Watersmeet area since mid-Decmenber and the clubs in that area keep those trails in impressively good condition considering the low snow year we are having. I'm sure you'll enjoy your time there!

Just got back from watersmeet

We just got back from the Watersmeet area. Stayed at the casino Fri - Tues. Great place to base out of. We did stop at the Mosiquito, and it is great. Ride up to Lake Gogebic and hit all of the spots. Gogibic Lodge, Root cellar, THE HOOP, and ate at J&W bar-b-que in Bergland and it was great. (We told them they needed to advertise on John Dee while we were there.) Trails were great every way we went.

All very true. The loop he describes of Trail 2, Trail 15, Trail 8 and Trail 107 is usually OUTSTANDING. If you want to do a backpack trip, I agree with making Big Bay your destination. Trail 15 to L'Anse, Trail 14 to Big Bay is another great trail ride. I would suggest staying at the Thunder Bay Inn: http://thunderbayinn.net/ Very historic and quaint with great food and a bar.

Yeah ... I've been to the casino..... And of course I know that a lot of snowmobilers stay there..... And I know they have cheaper rooms ... The point I was trying to make and the question that I was trying to ask is ................. Sure, People stay there and they contribute to the area businesses that support the trails, but do the casinos themselves spend any money to help with trail efforts and grooming efforts??????? Just wondering because where I'm from, if a hotel does not support the trails by way of donations or being a member of a club word gets out and loyal snowmobilers do not patronize those businesses. Just asking because I don't know if they contribute.

Well, they have big ads on all the trail maps, so that's a start!

Hello,
Yes, casinos are good for our sport. A friend of mine is a casino GM in lower MI and paid the locals to cut trail to the joint from the main trail, pays 28k per year for grooming, donates to the local clubs and buys 6 sleds a year to give away in the casino plus smaller items too. In the end the casino wants our business but it is our decision if we gamble or just take advantage of the low cost rooms, food etc. I do it all!

Hey gang, just got back from the trip to Watersmeet area. Stayed at a resort on the Cisco Chain of Lakes. Had a great time. Trails need fresh snow, but the grooming crews were out every day working with the snow they have. The trails were groomed well and still very rideable. We found more snow as we rode north and east of Watersmeet. We stopped at many of the suggested places, and they were great. The Cisco chain is a fun chain of lakes to run, but don't run them at night, unless you know where you are going (this is a large chain of lakes). We got lost 2 of the 3 nights we were going back to the cabin..Great trip though, thanks to all for the tips!
