Ford 6.0 Diesel

I had a 2005 6.0 f-350 and at 20,000 miles, the turbo was sticking and had to come off to get cleaned. One of the main problems with the 6.0 depending on the year is the EGR cooler. To try and meet emissions, they reroute some exaust back through the turbo and that needs to be cooled. After awhile the EGR cooler ends up getting dirty and or starts leaking usually around 40-50,000 miles. I traded mine off at 40,000 for a 6.4 350 and so far have been happy with the power. fuel milage is less though. I was getting 16 mpg with the 6.0 and an now getting 12 with the 6.4 .With the twin turbos, I can't keep my foot out of the throttle:) I've read alot about the egr coolers and there are companies that now make a EGR delete kit. Not emissions legal but well worth the money. The 6.0 also had some head gasket problems stemming from the fact that ford didn't have enough head studs in the block.

Junk, if you do purchase one, dont hop it up. Stay away from the tuners and all that stuff. Two buddies have them and both are junk.

I had a 03 6.0 and they replaced the turbo because the vains in it carboned up at 35000 miles, but now with the usld fuel you really dont have to worry about that. Now i have a 2006 6.0 and havent had a problem with it and there is 64000 miles on it now. If i was looking for one right now i wouldn't buy one that has a programmer in it thats for sure because thats a good way to strech head bolts and blow head gaskets.

7.3 is definately a proven motor. My work has 3 6.0's. Can't tell you the years off hand but can say have had nothing but problems with them since day one. Turbo's, head bolts, head gaskets, egr's, and even trans problems on one of them. I drove one of them when they first got it (just to see how it compaired to my 6.5 chevy_ which by diesel standards isn't much of a diesel) and I was not impressed at all. I myself would look another direction (brand) or try and find a 7.3 with lower miles. My dad has a dodge (04) and I would have to say that is a pretty impressive truck. Well for a dodge anyways.....If you are looking at one and thinking "man this thing is alot cheaper then anyother diesel I am looking at" there is a reason for that.

When I bought my 6.5 I knew it wasn't the biggest, or best diesel out there. But for what I paid for it and a little upgrades (about $2500) I have a truck that will run both mileage and towing with my dad's 04 all day long. And about $15 grand less into it.....

I had a 04' F250 with a 6.0L, that I purchased new. Ran it for 90,000 miles with no issues (must have gotten a good one). Then I bought a new 08' F350 with the 6.4L. After only 50,000 miles on the thing it was in the shop six times, and had to be towed in two of them. That truck was truly a P.O.S on four wheels. Ford has had trouble with their diesels since the 7.3L was put to rest, and for 2011 they have another new one coming out(6.7L). With all that in mind I bought a 2010 3500hd Chevy with the 6.6L. I would recommend staying away from Ford diesels(other than the 7.3L) until they get the bugs worked out.

Thanks

Thank you for your input, admittedly I am thinking the same thing as your general comments indicate. I have been running a 7.3 and have been very pleased but the body is starting to get long in the tooth so I need an upgrade, just not sure what to do...maybe a Toyota, lol.

Wait for the new engine to come out in mid April. I was at the Chicago auto show and got to talking to one of the engineers about the the new engine and it sounds like they may have gotten it right this time. I own a 00' 7.3 with 180k miles on it and love it to death! I told the engineer that, and he said they are hoping the new 6.7 becomes as reliable as the 7.3, but only time will tell. He also told me that the 6.0 was an absolute disaster of an engine for Ford. I have a couple of buddies with the 6.0 and it is hit or miss. 1 hasnt had a single problem, the other has had TONS of problems.

If you find a 6.0L you like, get the VIN number and go to the local Ford dealership. They can run an OASIS report to see what warranty work has been done to it. My buddy bought a 2005 6.0L a few years ago and the only warranty work that truck had was the heater control unit replaced. He had good luck with that one and it seems that if you got a good one, you were ok. He was recently looking for a work truck and found a 2006 that showed 21 engine related warranty claims. Two years ago I found a nice 2007 King Ranch with 13K miles on it. The report showed three "loss of power" incidents in the last 3,000 miles so I walked away. I don't think the dealer is supposed to give you that OASIS info unless you own the vehicle, but a little sweet talking can usually get it.

powerstroke.com has some good forums on this subject, talk nice on there and a guy will run oasis reports if you give him the vin number....good luck
