Since there has been and continues to be logging throughout the UP, forest roads are abundant and criss cross vast sections of CFR lands. IF you stay on these and resist the temptation to charge off trail and snap off the young sprouts that take over after logging, you will do little damage and it is fun. However, I would not even think of doing this without a good GPS unless you know the lay of the land from many past outings because you can get well away from fueling points and therefore have a nice long walk out of some of these areas.

You can get a decent GPS for far below the $300 you mentioned above. Get one and learn how to use it...or stay on the trails til you do. Last thing locals want to do is head out to find a lost sledder.

If you are going to be in that area, you can go to the Kenton Ranger Station and purchase a map of the Ottawa National Forest. They used to be $10.00. I have one and it's very detailed.
You still want to have a good idea where you are as some of the trails can really lead you into the abyss.

A fully charged smartphone with Polaris Snow Trails app and Googlemaps and you can do it.

Pre-cache the googlemaps though, you might lose cell coverage.

Also make sure the "forest road" is on State or Federal land, or it is an actual "seasonal road" of the county. Logging roads on CFR are private and off limits to motorized vehicles...

any recommendation on gps's?

Do a search on this forum and you will find lots of info on those many guys find works well. They are not very expensive and will save your hyde if you get turned around out there in the bush. There are even apps that can go on your smart phone but as stated, don't rely on cell coverage everywhere. This is why a GPS is a better choice.
