Front track shock, 2001 Polaris Supersport

At the end of last year I noticed the wife's Supersport saging in the back end. I took out the suspension yesterday and every thing was ok on the back spring and shock setup. The front swing arm was real mushy and I removed the shock and pulled off the spring. My question is should the shock be preasurized so the rod end is out? You can push the shock rod end in and it will just stay where ever you stop. There is some resistance when you push the rod in and out so I don't know if thats the way it is supposed to be. It is not a gas shock or anything fancy. Looks like just a hyd shock to me. Thanks for any help.

Oil shocks do not push the piston back up. So no it shouldnt. But if its original, its prolly junk anyway. Those shocks didnt last very long to begin with. Id try to find a used gas shock. Its only about 30-40$ to recharge a gas one. And then you will be able to adjust the spring preload too.
