fuel/oil premix ratios

I've got a 77 AC Panther 340. Haven't had it that long, as a matter of fact, I'm mixing fuel for it for the first fuel fill since I've owned it. Sticker on it says mix at 20:1 ratio with 90 or higher octane gas. That equates to 1 qt for 5 gallons. I'm wondering if its still necessary to do so with modern oils, I'm sure oil technology has improved ten-fold since 1977. 20:1 seems wickedly oil rich and like it would be fouling plugs etc. I seem to think that modern sleds are at a 50:1 ratio.

Whats your take?

I've been splitting the difference and mixing my '78 Cat 32/1 just to be safe. It doesn't smoke bad and I don't foul plugs.

Edit, I run premium in mine because it has no ethanol in it.

I knew guys who had those sleds back when they were NEW and they would carry extra plugs and often had to change them on the trail due to plug fouling from oil rich gas mixtures yet they always thought 'more oil was the solution' instead of 'better oil' and less of it.

AMSOIL Saber Professional 100:1 Pre-Mix


2.6 oz. per 1 U.S. gallon 50:1
8 oz. per 5 U.S. gallons 80:1
1.3 oz. per 1 U.S. gallon 100:1
8 oz. per 6 U.S. gallons 100:1

Late 70's early 80's always ran 100/1 Amsoil in TXL Polaris's. Sleds ran hard, no problems, just carried 2 6oz bottles.

Just mix it to whatever the oil is rated to be mixed. 50:1 oil mix 50:1. If its 100:1 I'd still do 50:1. Not any reason to buy any oil other then 50:1 since is so available.

100 to 1 amsoil is 98 weight sae base stock ( not 20)
also, it contains no solvent (to help it pour)
It is pure lube! 80 to 1 is more lube per gallon than oem inj. oil.
Other pre-mix oils are 50 weight base stock ie. mix at 40 to 1
