Cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, are popping up in the tip of the mitt. One doctor says they've had at least six confirmed cases since January.

Pertussis infections are typically more severe in infants and young children, and they can even be deadly.

However, whooping cough is preventable with a vaccine, which is available to children and adults.

Identifying symptoms as whooping cough can be difficult. The health department recommends seeing your doctor if you have a cough that won't go away. Jennifer Profitt and Photojournalist Justin DePrekel have more details on how you can stay safe
