I would like to ride on Drummond Island. Can you get there via Ferry this time of year? Schedule shows through November and then from Jan 2nd.

Ferry runs all year. If you've never been there, you will enjoy it. Nice scenery, low traffic, usually groomed well (provided there's enough snow). And be on the lookout for lots of deer.

Ferry over from Detour to Island. I recommend parking at the trail staging area that comes into Detour and ride thru town to the docks, it is prretty self explainitory. It cost far less to bring sleds acrossed on Ferry then a truck and say 4 place trailer. Plus it is cool! Ride the Island will take most the day if you hit everything. I have started in Pellston road to the Mackinaw bridge took the shuttle Van/6 place trailer accross to St. Ignace and rode to Drummond via Cedarville, caught the ferry in Detour rode one lap around the island, went accross the ice off the North side of Drummond to St Joseph Island Ont. then on to Thessalon Ont. in a full day. 285 miles. Also done the same trip and went to Wawa on second day. (do not attempt wawa leg with Halfway haven being closed).

I was told they have to because of national security.

The detour pass is always kept open to get semi trucks, etc. to the Island. The Coasties keep a path open between Drummond and most the North Channel for National security. The tree line to St. Joseph Island Ontario then over to the main land, that still opens when weather permits.

I am pretty fortunate that I have the honors of saying I rode from Drummond to Thessalon (33 mile ice crossing) before 911 happened. That was way cool not seeing land in any direction and taking pictures on the "Ice" border complete with US and Canada flags staked out. Also watching my buds freaking out when we had to cross a ice heave that oppened water 8 foot wide! Makes me want to buy a trail sled again!

Thanks for the information. We are heading to the Soo tomorrow and plant spend a day going to Island and back on Thursday. Even if the riding on the Island is Poor it will be fun to take the Ferry over and back.

If your heading down from the Soo you will have a ton of farmers fields to cross going the Pickford route. snow may be way bare out in the open. Drummond is a hoot especially the quarry road! Maybe Racoguy can give you some input!

Thanks Polarisrider1. I think all we can do is start down the trail and see how it is. Turning around may be what we have to do but at least we are riding. It is to bad that just accepting less that good conditions is what we have to expect the last couple years. We don't let it get us down. We just simply like to ride and some thin snow will not stop us. Maybe being on our almost 10 year old sleds with over 8k each miles helps this mindset. If I were riding a brand new machine we may think a little different :D

I suspect that is the same place. It is actually the road that runs from the Dolimite mine and the super huge dump trucks run it in the summer. it is lined with boulders and a great place to open the sled up.
