Why not just take the Western shore of the lake all the way up? Was just there this weekend and the lake is fine and much quicker then taking trails up. You can hop on the 1-8 in Bergland to then head up to Ontonagan. Otherwise, check the trail reports to see when these trails got groomed, they can get pretty beat up in which case I would much rather buzz up the lake.
If the trails are groomed they can be quite nice. I would just head up toward the gogebic lodge. If its not good then just get on the lake and follow the western/northern shore to Bergland. Your markers along the way are ??? - used to be Fish Tales, The Hoop and Holler on the NW corner of the lake, then Bergland. Remember - its a big lake - you'll be going for ten miles or so!
Last weekend, Our experience was that they were keeping 13 (east side of lake) in better shape than 1 on the west side. That being said, as mentioned above, there are packed down highways on the lake on both sides, but if you venture away from the packed down areas, there are areas of Slush over a foot deed in places.

If your coming up out of PI it's about 10 to 15 to Marenisco then about another 10 to bottom of lake. From there lake to hoop on west side about 10 to 12 from hoop to bergland about 2 to 3. Trail 1 west side has a lot more twisties but probably going to be rougher than 13 on east side. 13 is in the woods but a little more like forest roads and usually seems to be groomed better in my experience. Trail wise it's going to be probably 25 to 35 miles from bottom of lake to bergland. Hope that helps.
when I was up there in the 3rd week of January, they were both junk. The groomers were shut down for a couple of days to put cb radios in them for operator safety and the snow wasn't the best til you got north of Bergland. In the past, for some reason, I enjoy trail 1 going south and trail 13 going north better in those directions. They are both usually groomed good and the snow they've been getting should make both a fun choice.

Although this decision mostly would depend on if I was coming up from Watersmeet or Marinisco I prefer to go up 1 to 12 over to Onthenoggin... This way if trail 1 is bad you can exit it at the bottom of Gogoagibic in the Park, the Lodge or Fish tales where you can hop off the trail and you ride the west shore of the lake up to the beach in Bergland and hop back on the trails 14 miles north...If you take 13 up and its bad you can only hop off at the Root cellar and shoot across to the west shore at Fish tails and ride the west shore of Gogoagibic north...Either of the three ways works just don't ride the east shore north to Bergland as that would be bad...
