Gogebic & Keweenaw

Here's a quick re-cap of our trip over this past weekend. A little dated but hopefully useful for others.

Drove UP Thursday afternoon/night and stayed on Lake Gogebic...-15 at arrival time!

Friday we headed up to Copper Harbor and an overnight at the Mariner North was planned. Took 13N from Bergland to Rockland to Greenland to Twin lakes (hit a few forest roads too), lunch at Omer's, then 3 to the bridge, tried the Dreamland trail which was well marked and fun, then 122 to 124, finally hit up with 3 again and took Brockway trail on into CH. Only rough trails we hit were 122 & 124.

After a nice dinner at Mariner North and a long night at Zik's we had a bit of a slow go on Saturday morning but still managed to head out to High Rock, did the Eagle Harbor loop, back down 17 through Calumet and across the bridge to 3. One more late lunch at Omer's and we continued trail 3 to 13 and on into Bergland. Stopped at the Bay Bar for 1 or 2 (left due to a local polka band) and then headed to Gogebic Lodge. Had to have been over 50 sleds there so we didn't venture in...called it a night and hit up our cabin. All trails were in a great shape!

Sunday only half the group took an early morning run to Marinesco (1S), over to Wakefield (Trail 2) and then back to Lake Gogebic (Trail 8) where we met everyone else at the Hoop. Made a run up 1N to the Konteka in White Pine, the up to Lake of the Clouds, down South Boundary (11S) to 102. Other than the foggy mist every now and again the trails were the best we've seen in this area!

Needless to say, traffic appeared down as Wisco had rideable snow so not everyone and their mother were UP there! Every grooming club/area we went into did a great job and for that we thank them all.

Nice report "B", you guys are troopers with the cold.
Can you tell us if the connector trail to "High Rock" was groomed recently?

Thank you, Bear

It sure was...I feel like that one is groomed nightly.
Most everything was in tip top shape. Even those bumpy ones were manageable and nothing to avoid.

bonnevier, heading up there the 16th and know things can change but like what I hear so far, we are staying on Gogebic. How was 13 out of bergland? last couple years has been less than desirable, last year traffic and lack of fresh snow huge contributor, wondering what your thoughts were on this area?

13N out of Bergland towards Rockland was in great shape on Friday but a little choppy in spots on Saturday afternoon...which we kind of always expect. Much much much better than in years past! I feel like they re-routed it a bit over years past as some of the super tight corners are gone as are some of the steep hills. Still has a decent amount of twisties and elevation changes and tons of snow in that area.

Like anything...snow and traffic will be key. If no where else has snow but the UP then I always expect rougher than normal trails.

Lastly, it sounded like the North Country club is now in charge of grooming a portion on the trail including the "hill up to Rockland." When we were up there it was not being groomed BUT I heard they were going too yesterday. There was an easy bypass by continuing on Victoria Dam Rd and picking up 137 just a mile or so up the road. It was decently signed.

Been staying on Gogebic since last Thursday and we’ve had great trails for the most part. As bonnevier said, 13 was a bit rough Saturday afternoon but that’s to be expected. The detour on Victoria is still in place as of this morning. I have not had a bad trail in the Gogebic area this week, even the access trails in town were pretty good. With the snow coming and cool temps, trails should stay very good.

Not sure what trails you were on north of Rockland that had 2 foot moguls yesterday. I was on 13 to Greenland, the 13 loop and trail 3 railgrade and it was all very good. This was all before 2 pm.

Sorry to agree, Headwaters might as well not be there.
Lots of stories like yours.

Trails were great again today! They have new equipment and must have new blood involved also. I've really been impressed with them this year, although I haven't had the issues many have noted on here. Consistently very good this year. Even the trail to the Hoop didn't have a bump all week.

My group was shocked at that too! Even though its like 0.5 mile its still usually brutal...not this year!
The clubs around Gogebic have turned it around big time...they added a groomer on the south side of their system and have really organized a solid grooming plan. Hats off to them!

I agree bonnevier. Even the access trail to the gas station only had small bumps all week. 2 thumbs up!

They can do it if, and they want to! Congrats, and we will give it another try! It's the WANT, and WILLING EFFORT, that gets it done! They were in bad need of both.

Liking it!! I understand as well not logging on east side of lake too? would really like to not have to take lake up, was cool when younger but would rather stay on a trail and really liked the one on east side. Does anyone know if I believe it was trail 12 that heads over towards Silver Mtn which a section of is a seasonal road, they were logging there as well and a lot of the road was heavily plowed, is it the same this year? from Gogebic, day we arrive in afternoon, Ontonagon, lake of clouds, porkies, wakefield and back. day two Kee loop... Brockway mtn, eagles loop, High rock, gay and back. day 3 Silver Mtn, baraga, lance, big bay, michigamme, sadinaw, bruce and back, day 4 up in air yet. 8 days and COUNTING!! so chopping at the bit!
