Going to AZ

The wife and I are going down to Phoenix for a week to visit family. We will be staying with our family for the week but we are looking for some place to go for a night or two. Aka some place to drive, see some things along the way spend a night in a hotel then drive back (just to get away from the family for a day or two). Last year we drove to the grand canyon and spent a night there (absolutely amassing and would recommend it to any one). We like being out side, not looking to go to a big city and do that kind of touristy stuff.

Any suggestions?

"Prices fell 9.1% in Phoenix, compared with January, 2010,Prices fell 9.1% in Phoenix, compared with January, 2010," http://money.cnn.com/2011/03/29/real_estate/January_home_prices/index.htm

I suspect you will find some cheap rent out there with the housing prices falling like the temperature at night. Drop a quick ad in the paper and with empties laying around, bet you can find a really good deal on a mansion or some doby type place for the price of a motel room.

Just a thought.....

thanks frnash I did a search for that thread but could not find it (just assumed it got deleted because of the amount of time since last activity) and hence the reason I asked again because I remember lots of suggestions where made.

Go to Usery Mountain for a hike. Took our kids last week and they loved it wanted to go back next day. 1.5 miles up one way. You can climb higher if you want to get to the very top. I stopped at the enter at your own risk sign with my 5 yr old daughter. The rest of family kept going. Take University Ave east out of mesa towards apache junction to get to the mtn. While out on the east end you could go to a old gold mine town. Kinda neat but pretty dull for me. You could catch the flea market open fri-sun on way home. Thats a day full but really dont know of what to do for 2 days straight. The old western town called rawhide is kinda neat to see- just take your billfold full. There's plenty of places to stay in a cabin for night and horseback ride or rent 4-wheelers. Just never found the time to try those things down there. Find the sun and a pool. Wait the sun will be there as temps are to push 100 this weekend. Have fun in whatever you do.

Go to Usery Mountain for a hike? Or maybe not, unless you're a certified desert rat! As noted above, the local weather guessers are talking high temps in the mid to high 90s through Saturday, and mid to high 80s through next Thursday/Friday, and I expect 'em to raise those high temps for next week as we get closer. Welcome to Spring in da desert!

Of course "twenny - tirdy years ago" I yoosta regularly hike Piestewa Peak with temps in the 104-108°F range!

I was just trying to give ideas. Maybe we should tell him to hike by 6:00 a.m. Wait, park don't open until 8. I guess last week would have been the week for it at 70-72 degrees. Explains why so many people were climbing on a wed.

Salt Creek Canyon. Obviously doesn't compare to the Grand Canyon, but it is absolutely beautiful in its own right. Took a trip last year from Pheonix up to Salt Creek Canyon, spent a day checking it out, stopped in Show Low, and back down to Phoenix. Lots of miles for one day, but if you stop half way, or short cut to I think its Payson back to Phoenix. Left Phoenix it was 82, up in Show Low it was 28, with two shmucks in shorts and sandals looking lost. Fun ride for the wife and I though.

If you like time outside, couple nice things to do while in town. Hike Camelback Mountain (wait until you get passed by the 70 year old ladies jogging past you while you catch your breath). Last time I was up there there was a little bit of snow at the peak at Christmas

South Mountain Park is great also. Only place I have found where you can get into the middle of a canyon, and if it weren't for a jet trail overhead you would have no idea you are still actually within the City limits, it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere.

Roosevelt Dam to the northeast, and Superstition Mountains as someone else mentioned. All of these can be day trips

Sedona, Flaggstaff and the Organ Pipe Cactus National forest are nice. How about 4 corners to see the cliff dwellings, that's pretty cool.
