My buddy fell out of his tree stand today (30’) and is pretty busted up, broken hip, pelvis and leg. Jim and his wife are two of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and it’s going to take a while to recover from this set back, Good luck Jim.

Some of the totals are in, fibula broke in 2 places, the ball of his left femur jammed and shattered its socket and dislocated it, now has had surgery to put a pin through his tibia and is in traction. Next surgery set for Monday to fix his pelvis and socket with plates, pins and screws. He is very applicative of the thought and prayers.

This tree climbing stuff is way too dangerous. The risks do NOT outweigh the benefits....as for years, this was an illegal activity and people got their deer anyway.

I know of one friend of a friend who is now a quadriplegic from this sort of fall, and another one who wasn't even that fortunate.

It simply puts a huge element of risk into a fun activity which without this element, would remain a very safe sport.

I wish for Jim's safe recovery and hope that he has no lasting damage from this fall.

I hope your friend's recovery goes well. As I was setting up my tree stand this fall I was standing on the top pegs clamping the stand in and my strap broke and I came out backwards from about 15'. Landed pretty much flat on my back but luckliy walked away from it. Very thankful!

Thanks again for the well wishes. My friend had surgery Monday on his ankle and pelvis that seemed to go pretty good, or as good as expected anyway, but today he has had some issues with a high heart rate 125-155 and has needed blood transfusions so we are a little concerned.

come on, have you ever shot a deer from the ground?
I did last year and it is extremely difficult to draw back and shoot from 8-10 yards at eye level with a white tail.
I feel bad for this guy. My "scary stand" as I call it is only 24' to my feet and I decided last week that this is the last year for that set up. Its not only the height but it is one of those stands not level and just not comfortable.
I guess I'm getting wiser or "scareder" in my old age, probably the latter :)

First of all, I wish this guy the best. With that said I hope anyone who hunts from an elevated tree stand will spend just a little extra money and buy a harness system. It's really as simple as that, they are really easy to use after you get one. I bought a HSS safety harness and a Lifelineth that way I am protected from a fall as soon I take my first step. You can buy the harness system(depending which type) for under $200 dollars and the lifeline is around $30 dollars. This is well worth the money for peace knowing I will be protected from a fall. I bought one for a guy that hunts on our property and I will not allow anyone to hunt from a stand without one. The harness takes 10 second for me to put on and the lifeline stays on the tree for the deer season so all I have to do is walk to my tree and hook on. For several years I hunted not knowing there were things out there that are really affordable and easy to use. If anyone has any questions, I would be glad to help with the details. Im not sure if this is the right place for my post but hopefully this will save others from this type of thing.

Good luck Jim with the recovery!

what is the life line? is it something that reels itself up as you climb up and down and works kind of like a seat belt lock?

30 foot rope with a special not that allows you to slide it up up/down the rope as you climb. You hook to it at your stand. I will try to get pictures sometime. Go to cabelas or bass pro and find it. Read the reviews there to get a better idea
