Snyder Signs ORV Bills
Drivers of off-road vehicles now have the potential to use them on the shoulders of state and local roadways under legislation Governor Rick Snyder signed Wednesday.
The bills (HB 4284 , PA 117; HB 4299 , PA 118; and SB 50 , PA 119) would allow the Department of Transportation to grant local government requests that ORV users be allowed to drive the vehicles on the shoulders of state roadways and local governments to open the shoulders of the roads they control to ORV use.
Previously, only a handful of counties in northern Michigan could open the shoulders of their roadways to ORV use. The bills set requirements for ORV use on roadway shoulders and also expand the list of activities where an ORV license is not required, provide ORV license reciprocity with other states, allow the Department of Natural Resources to establish free riding days, and permit the state to exempt certain events from needing a permit.
"These measures will make it easier to enjoy off-road vehicles in our state, and will enhance tourism in Pure Michigan," Mr. Snyder said in a statement.
All of the bills were filed with immediate effect.
