Groomers in Houghton area ?

Does anyone know what is going on with the groomer up here. Normally they do such a great job and I always brag about how great but the last couple time man oh man has it been rough. Yesterday was ok going south from Lake Linden to Houghton but then coming back around on the Hancock side it was really bad. This morning the family and I started out going North and after about 5 miles of wash board MOGULS we just turned around we were hoping that the groomers would have been out over night so we figured get a early start and still no love... the trails were spent from the other day still. Wondering on the status of the Groomers are they up and going or is there an issue with one of them. Should we head south are the trails any better that way. Would like some one to please help out we really want to get out but I feel that walking the next day is also a great option. We love the area and come up here all the time but these last couple trips have been rough and no pun intended but it works.

I know a lot of the groomers are on this site and like I said don't mean anything mean towards you since we LOVE you and love seeing you just wondering if something is up since this isn't like the norm up here. The trails are usually like glass and that is 90% of the time, but this happening to be one of the bad 10% this weekend. Also any insight on nice trails you know of would be great.

You HAVE to expect less than desirable conditions. When it gets this warm.
Its just too da.. warm to groom.
Even if they did groom. People riding in warm weather KILLS trails in no time.
That's why so many people cancel trips during winter warm ups! (thaws).

2 threads and still a simple answer no grooming at 50 degrees. If you didn't know this.... now you know first hand. Nothing wrong with groomers just too warm to groom right now and have to wait for below freezing temps. As said by sweeperguy you have to expect lack of grooming or no grooming in Spring like conditions. If little or no traffic you stand a chance of decent conditions but if high traffic no groomers are going out to groom trails and if they did trails would not set up anyway. Head to the least traveled trails and hope for the best or hang it up for now. I'm parked waiting for better days and grooming.

Unless the temps drop below 32 degrees, they will not groom. Total waste of money and man power.

This is the Keweenaw Snowmobile Trail System Report for Friday, February 17, 2017.

Snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and trails are in fair to good condition with a base ranging from 24-36 inches. The groomers are out today. With the high temperatures expected for the weekend, groomers will be on standby and go out as weather permits.

Basically the snow needs to be cold enough to cut threw the tops of the moguls flow through the drag and fill the low areas. When the snow is to warm it will roll and just clog up in the drag acting more like a snow plow and push snow off the trails. Even if it's 32 deg only for a short period of time the snow is still not cold enough and acts like your making a large snowball.

You own a snowmobile and it's been 60 degrees and sunny for 48 hours and u can't imagine why the trails suck? What am I missing here???

That was my thought as well, tho' I'm no sled jockey, and I've never even had my azz on a sled, but having been on this forum since its inception, even I got that. The impact of temperature on a groom has been discussed over and over countless times, as has the futility grooming at elevated temperatures. Did I find a clue here?

That may say "New Member" above, but I wouldn't call someone a "newby" that had been a member here for 6 or more years!

If the link is to troublesome, you can download the Keweenaw app from the app store/play store. The report is on there, in addition to all other info Keweenaw related. It will even message you when they get a significant snowfall. You can find lodging, events, restaurants, and bars, check it out.

X2 LMAO.....I rode 400 miles on Friday 02/17/17 from the house in Ironwood to Copper Harbor, to Lac la belle, to Gay, back to Phoenix then home to Ironwood. Trails were mint all day long. Passed groomers all day. Shout out to all the Trail Bosses for even being out there on Friday with the warm weather. Returning home to Ironwood was decent Friday night until Wakefield, ran outta snow, but made it back. I'm sure glad it was dark, so I couldn't see how bad it really was. I'm sure I put on one **** of a light show burning up my DuPont's and shooting sparks from carbides. But its an Apex,so I was hooking up, even if it was on dirt. Lmao..

Hey people maybe he does not ride much or has not been in these conditions before. He obviously did not know that you cannot groom in warm weather. That does not make him stupid. Be nice - he is just asking. Whitedust had a nice correct answer - try to find a low traffic trail or hang it up because they cannot groom. The guy even acknowledged the usual good job the groomers do. This is supposed to be a helpful site for people to find out information about trail conditions. That is what he was asking about. I hate to think he will not ask more questions for fear of being called stupid. Welcome to John Dee sledn6!

You hit the nail on the head bladeguy. This site seems to be more about bashing people than about family fun and snowmobiling lately. I think the moderators don't care as long as you are a senior member. How sad.

Yes I have been seeing these nasty comments and responses more and more now and a lot of time Skylar or a Moderator actually jump in and again this is why I don't usually post anything because of all the internet know it all’s. I was a member before the new upgraded site and was reset back in 2009 and use to post a lot back then when people were actually helpful and had constructive help or comments not like the above idiots calling me out or anyone stupid that doesn't and never have groomed but rest assured when I see the groomer jar I always donate and love what they do for us, but I know that most didn't know that above 32 actually acts like a snow plow more then just knocking the tops of them over. I have been sledding for many years and like I said love it up there so much that I actually bought a house in Lake Linden to bring all the family and friends up there. So again didn't mean for this to become the thread that it has become, but see it more and more and it is usually the same people that seem to jump on everyone with any and the easiest questions. I can say in life thou I see the people that usually do that know less then anyone and have issues that just can't be fixed and that is their defense mechanism to hide how little they actually do know. So again thanks for the useful links and information above and you idiots that jump on everyone you really shouldn't be answering for people that love this site and have using it for years for real answers and help. This site is like the Snow Bible for most of us and people like that are ruining it and need to STOP. Go back and read my first post on this one really didn't think it was that bad to justify this bashing in the thread and having to type all this.

I will add that if anyone is reading this for future fun and amusement with the above I have a give another great KUDOS to Chad and Mike at M & M for the quick turn around on the sled. Their service as usual is second to none and did a great job and as alway friendly and helpful the UP way. You can tell a true Yooper they haven't been jaded and are always helpful and friendly.

Don't feel bad sledn6 I got the same kind if response when I asked about the terrible trails during the Christmas week. Lots of snow, good temps, just little to no grooming effort. They always find a way to make you the idiot, and the groomers get a pass every time.
