Trailered to Gwinn Yesterday and parked at the Up North Lodge. Took trail 8 east to Shingleton where we gassed up and headed to Trail 422 to see pictured rocks. I haven't been there for maybe 15 years. Then headed back and decided to take 419 up through Munising and eventually turned onto 7 to pick up 8 back to Gwinn.
It snowed the entire day sometimes very heavy and sometimes the sun peaked out for maybe a minute. Once it was so dark and snowy it felt like it was 8:00 at night when it was mid day. I guess a typical lake effect event, but fun to be in. Trails had so much snow on them at times it felt like we were off trail. Well worth the hour and a half ride to get to some great trails. There was an expected amount of traffic for this area, but no near misses. everyone was polite and hand signals when it made sense and none when it didn't make sense. All but one group slowed down while we all passed each other except one group and even then they were fine. We probably passed a half dozen groups with at least 10-12 sleds.
Trail 8 east was great except for just south of Au train where there were stutters. Maybe lasted about 5-10 miles. Then great all the way to Shingleton.
Trail 422 was also very good up to Pictured Rocks.
Trail 419 needed a groom. Again, tons of snow. just needed a groom.
Trail 7 same as 419.
Once we were back on 8 heading west the groomer had just made the run from Gwinn and was heading back. That section of trail was like being off trail on the way east and now was oh so nice, great way to end the day.
After 179 miles we Finished up with Dinner at the UP North Lodge. Overall great day with my son!
Bottom line is the warm up did not effect this area at all.
