Hardwiring GPS to Renegade?

I just purchased a Garmin GPS unit and am trying to determine how to hardwire this to my 2009 Ski-Doo Renegade X. Any information on how to do this will be appreciated.

I working on my solution right now and it is on the same exact sled as yours 09renX go figure. My plan is to add a cig adapter to the battery with about 12in of cable, then just use the regular adapters that are available. I want this option as I have a straight and 90 degree and I want the flexibility to use either one. A heated bar bag on the way and I want to use the cable that works out the best. Another reason for using the regular cord/adapter is that it already contains the fuse so I do not have to splice one in which was my original plan of cutting the cig adapter off and wiring to the battery not to mention it trashes a perfectly good cable. Doo has a 12 cig.adapter kit available that puts it right next to the column (opposite of the 12 RCA) but for my application it would be to close to the GPS and I would have a lot of cord to deal with.

I have a XOG. Last year I learned that it doesn't work to use the cigarette type adaptors because the connection just isn't that good and the Xog was in a constant mode of re-boot because of power interuptions. After I went through the trouble of hardwiring - with a fuse-all the way from the bat to the unit I found that the mount for the XOG just couldn't stand the bouncing and sooner or later will fall off. Maybe your model is different and has a better mounting plan. This year I am not even going through the bother of mounting and wiring. I will just carry it in my pocket. I wish someone would just make this a factory option with a nice big color screen. I bet there would be a lot of takers. Good luck.

This is how I mounted my XOG. no problems. I would never mount a GPS on the handle bars the way I ride.

I am having the same trouble with the plug end for the 12 volt Cig lighter popping out. I hard wired but always forget about clearing the wirs when lifting the hood. So I am back to the lighter socket. My XOG goes to battery when it comes unpluged and gives a message of power interuption. push plug back in and message goes away on its own after a few seconds. I don't have a sled battery to rely on and only charges when the sled is running. I am looking into a different socket to use. The one I have is an ascessory socket from NAPA.

GPS Hardwiring

I just run a 1 into 2 audio pigtail (Radio Shack) from my shield plug to the shield and the garmin. I just put the GPS in the tank bag so I can see it and goes into the motel easily at the end of the ride.
Works fine on the Viper with electric start.

Good to know about the cig connector. Since my cig adapter will be close to the battery I will be strapping it in with zipties and figure a few more to keep the connection engaged, nothing a ziptie can't fix. I did not want to use the OEM location since the plug would be sticking out a bit and could be knocked out plus I would not be able to strap it down w/o drilling holes which I do not want to do. If this doesn't work I'll probably not hardwire and just rely on keeping it in the heated handlebar bag, altho lithiums are pretty expensive for throwaways, altho if I find the right cable I may splice it in direct with a fuse.

I really like this idea. This way you will never lose the thing. I don't use a tank bag right now but I am going to get one.

That is kind of the way I mounted my XOG on my Vector. I just don't trust the plastic mounting tabs. Especially when they get cold and brittle. If a person ever starts getting a little aggressive and you hit a big bump or two you might look down and see no GPS. Of course it is possible that Polarises ride so smooth and soak up the bumps so much better than the Yamis a person doesn't have to worry about such things. Just kidding. I just don't want anyone to lose their GPS.

I have the XOG with the Ram mount. Had the same problem with the connection at the cigarette lighter coming loose. Just wrapped some electrical tape on plug above where the contacts are. It fits snug in the cigarette adaptor now, and works fine. Quick an easy fix.

What tabs? the bottom of mount is like a cradle and the top has a notch that fits into a slot on GPS it is work to get out when you want to take out. I removed the swivel ball part of mount. then 2 sided tape the suction cup part and ran self tapper screws thru the suction cup part, It absorbs the vibration and does not fall off. the down side of the XOG is it is touch screen. everytime I wipe the snow off the screen I seem to make changes. It's nothing major but it happens.

cig lighter poor connection?

Strange--I have XOG with hardwired socket, never had a problem. I went to Arctic Cat and bought the factory cig/acc plug that comes in 07 and up f series sleds, it has a plastic housing with a plastic tightening nut on the backside. I don't know if that could be an issue, but these are high quality units at less than $10. Maybe worth a try??

Also I think that I soldered the connections at rear of socket to power source. That definetly could be a culpret.
