Harley Davidson Ext Warranty

The warranty on my Fatboy expires May 29th of this year. I called HD and spoke with a rep to get some extended warranty prices.

2 year - $964
3 year - $1149
4 year - $1354
5 year - $1644

I could also add a tire and wheel package to protect against any road hazards.

2-3 year - $290
4-5 year - $365

Looking for some thoughts from current HD owners on whether or not its worth it. Thanks guys

Personally I would save the money and apply it toward the repair bill in the unlikely event it would require repairs. I have been riding HD's since the early 90's and don't ever remember taking one to the dealer for repairs. Most of the minor things that have come up I repaired myslef or had friends that have more knowledge than me assist. I do understand there is always the chance of something significant going wrong but the odds are against it IMO. Even if you have no mechanical skills at all I would still save the money and take the chance. Just what I would do. I bet the dealer will negotiate the cost of the warranty also. My understanding is that there is a significant mark up in extended warranties.

a couple questions

Do you just ride around town/home? if so I agree as posted above.
Do you ride a lot out of town/long road trips? If so maybe the extended warranty would be worth it (as you don't have tools, with you and then you just want to get it fixed as quick as possible).

Does the warranty cover towing (picking the bike up) if you break down on the road?

A deductible?

I haven’t driven out of Michigan and probably wont for some time. Probably the farthest I would go would be to the cabin in Curtis. There is a $50 deductible.

I’m not sure if it covers towing or not. They are mailing me some more information.

OK, first, let me be clear, I do not like extended warranties.

Here's why-
You say your warranty is expiring, so I would assume your bike is a 2009. I would also assume the warranty covers repairs, not maintenance.

Question- Do you really think your bike will require $964 worth of repairs over the next 2 years? If you do think that, sell it and buy a different one.

Here's the math...you live in MI, so let's say you can ride 6 months out of the year. Two years, 12 months available to ride. You probably don't use the bike as your primary vehicle, but as a hobby. So, let's say you ride 25% of that 12 months, that means in two years you will ride the equivalent of 3 months. So, $964/3=$321.33 per month for coverage, and remember, you still pay for maintenance and accidents.

Sure, the bike could blow a gonkulator bearing or something and cost $1500, but even then you are only out an additional $600 because you have already prepaid the first $964 of repairs whether they happen or not.

I like your calculations, dc....we think alike.

I don't do harley's, but seems that if you did the research, just like sleds, there are good motors and bad ones and new motors untried and tested.

Those would be my biggest concerns....and if you find that the motor is prone to issues, then get it. If not pocket the money and put it toward gaskoline and yoil!

I don't know about Harley stuff, but if this is anything like car/truck extends, there is huge markup in that biz, and maybe some shopping will get you a far better deal so it won't hurt so bad to lay out the cash.

I know I did that on 02 GMC, and only because I got a decent deal on extended and it payed off because both front axles had to be replaced, and would have cost me a bunch. Over all, I am not a fan of that security blanket policy.

I also agree with DC, and his calculations make alot of sense, especially considering how short our riding season is in this part of the country. My warranty expired last year around Memorial Day and I never had any inclination to purchase the extension. I did everything by the book during the warranty period though. I do understand your concern, as it is a fairly substantial investment. In the unlikely event something big does go wrong, that $1000 will go a long ways towards the repairs. Just like anything, keep up with the maintenance, and take good care of your bike, and it will treat you good for many years.
