SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -The San Jose Sharks have signed the goalie who helped knock them out of the playoffs, agreeing to a one-year, $2 million deal with Antti Niemi.

The team announced the deal Thursday.

Niemi stopped 129 of 136 shots in the Western Conference final to help Chicago sweep the Sharks. The Blackhawks went on to win the Stanley Cup behind Niemi but cut ties with the goalie because of salary cap concerns.

The 27-year-old Niemi played all but one period of the Blackhawks postseason run, going 16-6 with a 2.63 goals-against average, .910 save percentage and two shutouts.

He was awarded a $2.75 million salary in arbitration. Chicago chose to let him go and signed veteran Marty Turco.

Niemi was offered a 3 year deal by the Hawks for a little more per year and he turned it down. It all came down to keeping him or Hjammer. I think it was the right decision to let him go. Niemi moves well post to post, but he does give up rebounds (most of which where cleared by an exceptional defense) and is cought out of balance a LOT. Let's see how he does facing 30-35 shots per game instead of the 20-25 he saw this year.

Might as well be 100 yrs. hard to repeat nowadays !! Pavelski will bring the cup to Wisconsin ! he might even bring ANTI up to the UP for some Kainuulainen Kalakeitto !! GO SHARKS !!

Niemi turned down 8 million over 3 years from the Hawks......Or maybe his agent told him to! This deal is not a great one for Niemi (Only 1 year), and he stands the potential to lose a lot of money unless he has an amazing performance this year with the Sharks. The Sharks have some young guns waiting to play goalie, so Niemi better be a rock start between the posts!

The Hawks were definitly not cheap, and there was not a huge market to sign Niemi to a long term deal....Hence getting the 1 year deal for only 2 mil.

Yeah, I looked at that after it was posted. I know I am going to get a beating. If you are so bent on the cup being in Wisconsin, you should have been in Madison 3 weeks ago when Burrish brought it to the Kohl center. Everyone got autographs and pictures with the cup.

Toews was MVP ,never scored a goal in cup series ! Neimi should have been MVP ! somethings rotten in Denmark here !!

The Con Smythe trophy is for the most valueable player in the entire playoffs not just the finals. Toews led the league in points in the playoffs. Niemi had one good game in the finals and one good series in the rest of the playoffs. He was average at best the rest of the time. Sounds like an obvious choice for me. Kane and Buff would have been chosen over Niemi.
It is surprising people are saying the hawks where cheap when they have spent every penny available to them under the salary cap. The NHL has a HARD CAP, meaning they are not allowed in any way shape or form go over it. Not a soft cap like the NFL and NBA where you just have to pay a luxury tax when you go over. They still had to pay 19 other players (21 when you figure in that they need and extra defenseman and forward for 2 healthy scratches in case of injury) and when they could get a better goalie (IMO) for less money, Niemi and his agent where told they could take their services elsewhere.
Again, the cup was in wisconsin this year when Burrish brought it to the kohl center in Madison. Unless Madison has succeded from Wisconsin and become its own state I believe the cut was in the badger state this year. Photographic proof above.

So the Sharks must be under the same tight salary cap as the Hawks ? Must be better management then!! The Sharks made it tougher for the Blackhawks to keep Niemi when they signed Chicago restricted free agent Niklas Hjalmarsson to a $14 million, four-year offer sheet in July. The Blackhawks matched the offer for the defenseman but that left them with less money available for Niemi.

Must be the $$$ chicago cheap!Wilson said Niemi and forwards Dustin Byfuglien and Dave Bolland were the biggest difference in the sweep that featured three tight games. Now Niemi and Byfuglien are among the eight players who have left Chicago since the team won its first Stanley Cup in 49 years.

How's that San Jose playoff slogan go? Something like:

"The Sharks, snatching defeat from the JAWS of victory!" :)
