Hayward Lakes Area - Sawyer County Trail Conditions

Hello Riders!
Well, we hate to say it but we are closing in on the end of this season, and what a great season it has been! As always it flew by too fast but we are so grateful we were able to enjoy this great sport in 2021! This time last year as we were saying goodbye to season 2020 the world was becoming unfamiliar and shutting down and our ideas of normal would forever be changed. Over the last year we all have been unsure what events we would be able to partake in so we have such gratitude we were able to enjoy this sport this year and feel a bit "normal" so to speak! We support all winter sports here in Sawyer County, whether it be snowmobiling, ATV/UTV, skiing, Fat Tire biking, snow shoeing any path you choose that gets you out there to enjoy the outdoors! This year also brought new riders that were either introduced or reintroduced into the sport, we welcome you and can't wait to see you on the trails next season!
Today is March 4th and the first weekend of March is always a bonus weekend if we are able to ride, and that's what we have, a little bonus. We have spoken to several avid riders, many who are also groomers that were able to finally get on their own sleds for a change of pace and check out the trails. They reported back some info for us to pass along. Just as we expected, the conditions vary from place to place, some areas are poor and some areas are still quite passable. As you would expect those areas that are rideable are those areas that are most protected from the elements such as areas on the denser forest trails i.e. Seeley Hills, Chequamegon National Forest and Flambeau Forest. The areas that are poor are again as you'd expect, those out in the open area with no coverage and any on and near the roads. So for those of you that want to squeak one more ride before the finally we can offer some suggested trails that these riders tested and are as of today fair and those that are poor.
Trails that have been reported fair;
Seeley Hills; trails 15, 77, 8, 31
30 from the casino to 9
319 between Lost Land Lake to Moose Lake to the Flowage
5 from Moose Lake south towards the Flowage
Trails 12, 18, 21, 53
Trails that are poor:
4 from Nelson Lake
Trail 63
3/9 between Chief Lake and Round Lake
9 north of Round Lake
Trail 3/5 that runs parallel to Hwy 77
Lakes are reported to be passable right now as well, as long as you stay on the staked trail, off of that it gets slushy. But as always, we suggest staying on the staked trail for your safety.
Many of these that are reported as still passable are trails that were groomed the end of this last weekend and early this week, which was the purpose for grooming them, in hopes of sustaining the snow on them as long as possible.
So as we near the end of the season we want to send some HUGE thank yous! First, to the GROOMERS! They make this all possible! Not just the many logged hours in the machine but also the logged hours fixing and doing maintanence. Many thanks to all of our volunteers, there are so many people behind the scenes making sure everything operates smoothly such as with trail openings, working with the towns/county/state, DNR, forestry, land owners (another HUGE thank you to those land owners), etc. Many that work with funding for these trails and the equipment used to maintain them. Many that react quickly to safety concerns. The list goes on. Thank you to our awesome businesses for their food, drinks, lodging, fuel, all of their hospitality! Finally we want to thank ALL of you for choosing Sawyer County as your riding destination! This area is brought to life with all of your visits and excitement! Snowmobiler’s are just an amazing group of people! Thank you for supporting our county and businesses!
While we do have to say good bye to our snowmobile season 2021 that doesn't mean the fun stops! Remember, Sawyer County offers a fabulous ATV/UTV trail system! The spring closure will be lifted 5/15, we will update as we move into spring. We have many ATV/UTV only trails but also many that are shared with the snowmobile trails. It's always fun to see the changes in scenery from winter to spring to summer to fall on these trails! So please come back and visit soon! Until then, thank you for the fabulous season, stay healthy and stay safe!
