Heavy Snow / Tree Damage

The heavy wet snow of December 16th caused a lot of damage to trees in my area. The soil is all sand so its mostly pine trees that thrive around here. I had a nice white pine in my front yard that was just a twig when we built 13 years ago. I told the excavaters to be careful and not run it over. It was kinda the measure of our life here. It is now about 25' tall. The storm broke several large branches near the top. I am disappointed that it will probably have to come down but what really surprised me is what happened in back. Four trees ranging from 7"-12" in diameter were uprooted. The one on the far right is the largest. I'm guessing the roots took the other three. It's just hard to believe the snow could do that!! I suppose the weak sandy soil has something to do with it.

UP....those trees probably can be saved. You will need to "right" them back up again and use cable to stake them off, but by the looks of the tree ball, or the lack thereof, these trees probably can be saved. Just loop a line 2/3 way up the tree and use a beefy piece of equipment and "tow" them back straight again. Much of the tree roots are still there and it can repair itself, if enough of them were not seperated. This will require some work on your part, but since the tree has sentimental value, take the time to do it.

I have done it and I have even strapped tops of pines back on after they snap off and had them "glue" themselves back together and are growing just fine.

Booondocker,
The ones in the pics are just some jack pine toward the back of my lot, not a big deal, I'll cut 'em up in the spring. I was just amazed to see how they all went in different directions, like a bomb went off. I suppose since they were all in a clump, with few branches on the inside, all that weight on the outside pulled 'em over.
