Helmet recommendations for 6 year old

Looking to buy a helmet for my 6 year old,m perhaps for Christmas. He will probably only use it a few days each year so don't want to spend a ton but also want to protect his head obviously and be comfortable. Last year was his 1st year riding on a family friend's 120, and he'll probably ride that again this year and also sit in front of me on mine for short rides. He's a big kid - last year we alternated trying to just have him wear his bike helmet and trying an older but smaller helmet we borrowed. The older helmet fogged quickly since it didn't have a breath deflector, so it didn't work well.

Any ideas? I was thinking closed face but maybe the motocross with goggles would work better for fogging. He won't be riding long hours or when it's terribly cold out.

Also starting to think about getting him a decent set of pants and jacket for riding. He would probably grow out of those quicker than the helmet.

Everyone has a different idea of "cheap" but I got my boy a GMAX that I believe was around $80 and works well.

That doesn't sound bad at all. I meant I don't want to drop $200 for the latest and greatest since he'll just use it a few days a year and will likely outgrow it before too long. Heck I think my hjc was about $100. Main thing is to find something that works well with fogging and the cold and is safe and comfortable.

I would go with the full face, but that's just me. HJC and Z1R come to mind. Both reasonable I think.

Definitely full face in my opinion with some "no fog" spray would probably take care of the fogging issue. Particularly if he only does shorter rides.

I bought a used one on the JD forum. It was an Artic Cat branded helmet 3 kids and still going strong. I then bought an HJC at Hey Days that came with extra padding to adjust as they age.

I was pretty fortunate in the kids winter wear dept. We had a very large snowmobiling family when my kids were growing up so we did an exchange day around the family Thanksgiving get together. Kids could care less about brands, they just wanted to ride. We used to trade kids winter wear for venison also. All my nieces and nephews got cool stuff to wear that way.

I suspect there could be a business for someone who would want to deal in used "kids" winter wear.

Mrs. Russholio here. We bought our granddaughter a GMAX Critter helmet. It was about $80 and came with several different pads to velcro inside so she can wear it for several years. It's full face, doesn't appear to fog and she likes to wear it. She's only worn it one season and only a few times but we like the fit and the quality.

x2 on the GMax, I got one for my daughter when she was 6, it still fits now, and its got internal breath box, and flip down sun shade in the front. fancy LED light on the back that she likes when she is on my 2 up machine..Good helmet for the $

I picked up hjc basic helmets for my kids when each were smaller. Now my last one is turning 12. He will have a hand me down but it does have a heated shield.
