I am interested in buying my first helmet cam. I am thinking Hi Def, however, I am looking for any/all suggections. Please advise if I should go with battery power, or 12V connection, weather proof enclosure, wireless control, etc. Thanks in advance.

You have 2 options (and believe me I have researched the heck out of them...)

ContourHD (NOT the 1080p - you need a pretty fast computer to make it work)
Comments
- compact and streamlined
- lasers help you aim it (but it is difficult)
- nice mount systems
- 135* wide angle viewing
- you can find them on ebay for $230 with goggle mount, flat surface mount and battery
- come with all the software you need to edit and upload videos to the web via vholdr.com community
- waterproof case available for measily $40
- poor sound quality overall - gets lots of wind noise
- buy a 16G micro SD and you have 8 hours of recording time
- battery lasts about 2-4 hours in the cold (higher storage batteries are available)

Go Pro Motorsports HD (1080p)
- 180* wide angle viewing (more fish eye than contour)
- comes with waterproof case standard
- comes with 2 mounts, one flat surface and one helmet (I think)
- a little bulkier when mounted
- 1080p resolution but adjustable
- better sound quality - reduces wind noise greatly
- lens seems to do a better job of not collecting snow
- I haven't seen a great discount on them yet. they are right around $300
- can handle a 32G microSD card. That is a ridiculous amount of footage even in 1080p
- battery life is about 2-4 hours in cold weather

When I looked into both, I decided to go with the ContourHD mostly because of price. I think both are great options. I would love to see how the GoPro does with a farther away focal point (the wide angle scares me a little).

We used to have a wired connection before running with a lanc controller into a Sony miniDV. This setup was a pain in the butt with all the wires and connections that can come apart (plus it cost about $1000 all said and done).

Hope this helps!

Talked to a guy in Mass City that had the CountourHD. Said he paid $200 on ebay and loved the thing!

I have the ContourHD 720 and am very happy with it. I have no first hand experience with the Go Pro. Decided on the Contour because it is more compact compact/streamlined.

Blutooth,

where can you get the higher storage batteries?

I have the ContourHD 1080P and the battery lasts maybe 45-50 minutes while riding, but around 2 hours while sitting on my desk at room temperature. My 16gb card lasts all day, but I carry four charged batteries and would like to use batteries that last longer the the time between stops.
