So Kraft foods is running a competition to come up with the city/town to be named "Hockeyville USA" The winning down will host an NHL pre-season game and also be awarded $150,000 for improvements to the hockey program/facilities.

Houghton has been nominated and is in the running. I can't imagine a more perfect locale to be named Hockeyville. For starters, Houghton is the BIRTHPLACE of Professional Hockey. Yep, what we now know and enjoy as the NHL was born right here in Houghton MI. Houghton is also home to 2 college hockey teams, as well as numerous boys and girls hockey teams from 3 year olds to the juniors (teens and 20's). There are also an Old Timers League and Houghton hosts a huge old timers tournament ever year.

I am sure that there are other cities that also have things going for them, but as a true lover of the sport and one who has also been fortunate to see how deep hockey runs in everyone's blood up here, I think it would be a perfect fit for Houghton to be Hockeyville USA. The money would help with major improvements to be made at the main arena in the area... THE DEE STADIUM! (no relation).

So click here to vote! The voting in this round ends in 12 days.

I would love to see the power of this website put us over the top!

Thanks!

Yea, it looks like there are as many as 3 Dee stadiums, but they are all the same. I guess I would vote for the one with the largest numbers, but would hope those running the contest would see this and add them all together at the end.

Just to clarify, all you need to do is choose MI as the state and type in Dee for the arena/stadium and you will be taken to the page to vote for the Dee.

My vote is in. The Copper Country & Hockey go hand in hand, after all, it is the birthplace of professional hockey, couldn't be a more appropriate candidate. It would be an honor to have a professional game held here just for that purpose & put the Keweenaw Peninsula on a pedestal for all to see.-Mezz

I put in my vote, when i searched find a rink and put in Houghton it did not show Dee Center, just Houghton arena, would this also be splitting votes, or are there 2 rinks there.
When I was in pee wee and squirt hockey in the 70's it was the highlight of the year to roadtrip to Houghton, Hancock for late season and playoff hockey.
John will you post when the next rounds of voting are?

The other rink they are referring to I believe is the Houghton County Arena, nonetheless, The "D" is the oldest & is iconic. It use to be Michigan Techs home ice not to mention every other hockey level through the area. The contest lists the "D" as Dee Stadium & Ice Rink located in Houghton, the Houghton County Arena is located in Hancock at the Houghton County Fairgrounds, not the same. I received an e-mail from Kraft Hockeyville late Friday night stating that my story had been accepted. I didn't realize that a narrative about why you feel your rink of choice had to be accepted or not, but, it was & here it is, https://kraft.promo.eprize.com/hockeyville/nomination?id=23700 . I encourage everyone to vote for the Dee, it's the only logical choice.-Mezz
