Help navigating the north shore

Looking at taking a trip up towards the north shore area. Have never ridden the area and looking for advise on direction of travel, towns to stop in ect. Hoping to stay somewhere around Duluth and ride from there as it saves some drive time. No idea where to stay in that area. Would like hotel with bar if possible or at least close to one. Don’t drink much while riding but like to relax a bit in the evening. Any info would be greatly appreciated. If I am all wet thinking I can stay in Duluth just say so...

Your better off driving 20 more miles up to Two Harbors....way easier to access the NSST trail from there.

I would 3rd the skipping Duluth and going to Two harbors, Superior Shores is the only place I've stayed at Two Harbors, pretty nice they got a pool, restraunt, bar trail access although I believe it's like 11 miles in and out the same trail each day, also close to town for easy access to gas and other stuff if needed, I have never stayed in town but I think there's a country inn or something by the mc Donald's and holiday gas station, I have stayed in Carlton before at the Americainn and ran the munger into Duluth which is neat but not very long of a ride I think it would be miserable or impossible to get to the nsst from there, a place I've thought about staying before but hasn't worked out is on island lake called eagles nest resort looks like they have nice bar and grill with some small cabins but westt of the nsst but close to the Yukon and some of those trails west of the nsst they are long wide usually smooth and can rack up the miles on them

I have gone thru Duluth twice and it is not a good experience especially with low snow conditions. Like everyone else has said start in Two harbors. The whole North Shore trails has spur trails into the towns and for the most part there is nothing right on the main trail. Finland is probable the closest to the main trail of all the towns. Here are some links to maps: https://www.snowmobiletrails.com/pdf/lower_north_shore.pdf https://www.snowmobiletrails.com/pdf/upper_north_shore.pdf The Trestle Inn by Finland MN is a neat place to go.

We too may be considering the north shore area. Any thoughts on the Ely area? I looked at ely.org and it had several winter lodging options to consider we have never rode Minnesota before so it would all be new to us.

You would love the Ely area. Great trails too.

Yup. Ely area great riding. Another area, which is my favorite, voyageurs Nat park. Awesome area. Can't beat Northern Minnesota riding.

We went riding up there for the first time in Feb. of 2018 - great trip. We stayed at Superior Ridge Resort Motel, south of Tofte. They have a short little feeder spur trail right into the NSST - very easy to get going on the trail. We had a room that had a terrific view of Lake Superior - was nice to wake up to every morning. Also had deer about 20' away from our window each morning. They don't have a restaurant or bar that I recall, so we would typically go to Lutsen Resort for drinks, dinner and some live music. We found that the best riding was 5-10 miles away from the Superior shoreline. Have fun!
