There is an annual race from Long Beach to Honolulu called The Transpac, a 2215nm downwind run. I have seen several of the ULDB boats in the past, 70, 80 foot flat pieces of fiberglass designed to surf the waves. Crazy. Two of my buddies have been in the race twice, sailing a 40 footer. It took them about 15 days.

The old course record was set at 04:19:31:37, set in November 2005 by Olivier de Kersauson (FRA) and crew on the 110-foot trimaran Geronimo. This year, Lending Club 2 just smashed that record at 03:18:00:09, improving on the existing record by over one day. The boat is a 105 foot trimaran with hydrofoils, they reached a top speed of 40 knots (!) average speed was 24.61 kts (!!!). In one day they sailed over 700 miles, covering 1/3 of the distance.

I know what it is like in the middle of the ocean at night on a 37 footer, plodding along at 6-7 kts. I can't imagine flying on a foiled trimaran at 2:00 AM at 40 kts. 3 1/2 days to Honolulu...wow!
