Does anyone know how to access this hotel from the trail on the way in to Houghton from the south (Trail 3)? Is there an access trail up to the hotel?

There are 2 ways to get in there off of 3. You can come in the feeder trail that is access for Americinn. (This is groomed half way in to just behind Houghton power sports, groomer barn) Go up the road towards Walmart, cross the road at the light. And run the sidewalk 1 block to the motel.
Or run trail 3 further north till just before the road crossing at the bridge. Take the trail off to the right that goes up the hill. That will put you on a street behind the Econfoods store. Following the street towards the grocery store, cut through their lot by the gas station. Cross the side street into Holiday Inn lot. Normally enough snowmobile tracks to guide you in. If any warm weather before your visit you may encounter some bare pavement either way. When I was up that way last week roads were hard pack no pavement showing. But city was starting to scrape roads trying to get them bare.

I love H.I. Expresses and earn plenty of points there from travel and stayed there four years ago, never again; NO SNOW TO GET THERE. You might as well trailer to the trail it's so bad.
Stay at the Ramada, they have the BEST trail access in the area or the AmericInn in Calumet, they are excellent too.
I have been staying at the Super 8 (which I believe is a rebranded H.I. and is quite nice for the price) but their trail access is HORRIBLE AND LIKE A PLOWED FIELD of moguls for 1/2 mile.

The Holiday Inn is a great place to stay and you can get there easily with minimal no snow conditions. You ride through the grocery store parking lot, down the side of the road (which always has snow) right onto trail 3. I won't stay anywhere else. The Ramada in my opinion is dirty, I really don't like food lying on the carpet in the hallway. Super 8 would be my next choice, but it is mogul central for trails.

I will second the Holiday Inn and Super 8 as a good choice as well. But the moguls from the bridge to the Super 8 get pretty big!

Thank you, all. I just replaced a ski and two carbides from my trip through Houghton/Hancock over the holidays, so I think we'll relocate to a hotel closer to the trail. Ramada is booked, so we'll try the Quality Inn in Houghton. It looks like its two blocks from the trail and lift-bridge. I appreciate the advice and comments!
