Need opinions....Which is a better place to stay at for snowmobiling? I have been to H/H many times but never stayed at either. How far from the trail is the H.I. Express? Any feedback? Thanks!!

Don't expect much if you stay at the Magnuson. It's due for some updating. My room was musty smelling last time I was there, about 2 years ago.

Stayed at the HI - Ex last year. Easy to get to off the trail that runs right along the canal. 1/4 mile of residential type road to ride. Gas station and quick mart kinda place right next door.

Copper crown has indoor sled parking which is nice. They have a good diner practically attached to the place. Stayed there twice this year and going back tomorrow. Can't beat the price.

I never stayed at the Copper Crown, but I can tell you that HI is nice. The only bad part is you have to ride across the Shopko lot to get to the road that leads to the trail. The rooms are new and everything is right there. I like it there but was unable to get a room this weekend.

Go north a block and about a block west there is a Italian place... home made Ravioli that is really really well done!

If this "urban" driving is a concern maybe the Ramada is for you. That is where I stay as it is right on the trail and is very convenient.

Is there a sign on the trail telling you to turn to the Holiday Inn?

As of last year there was not. I suggested to the Manager that they put one up.

It's easy to find on the trail though. If you are heading to the bridge, as you ride along the canal, right BEFORE you cross the road to get to the canal side of the trail, there's a wide opening that goes up a bit of a steep hill. Well tracked and easy to follow. I'll see if I can mark up a map and post it here.

See if this gives you an idea. This is exactly where you turn off the trail to get to the HI - Express in Houghton. There will be MANY tracks to follow along side the road to get you there. Don't do anything stupid.....take it easy and don't do anything to draw attention to you and your group. This "trail" has been taken to the hotel for several years now.

Click on "earth" or "satellite" view to see the details. The "trail" going up the hill is visible. Follow Calverley and Park Rd's to get to the HI - Express. It's not as far as it may look.

groomerdriver: Great map! (It's looks to be ≈ 800' from the Bill Nicholls Trail to Calverly Ave. ≈ 0.7 miles in all to the HI.)
Two questions from a non-sled-jockey:

  1. How do you get from da bridge to the trail, apparently via Lakeshore Drive and the Houghton RV Park?
  2. Where do you park your sled(s) at the HI?

P.S.: If anyone's looking to buy some property in da "Copper Country", stop in at the Century 21 North Country Agency right next to the HI, they were very helpful to me when I sold my home (¼ mile up da hill on C-P road from) "beautiful downtown Chassell" some years ago.

Another suggestion is the AmericInn- just north in Calumet. I stay there for work on occasion and always see a lot of sleds in season. Clean and friendly, easy access to trails.

I always stay at the Holiday Inn ..free breakfast and coffee in the am and the trail is right behind the grocery store. Plus the is a gas station right in the parking lot across the street....good luck

Great directions, you look like an old pro at that place! :)
