Hot summers = cold/snowy winters?

Over the past few years, I've noticed that if we have a cool summer, there is not much in the way of snow over the winter and vice versa. Besides El Nino, is there a relationship between the two?

There is what I guess you could call a "loose" relationship. I have found that winters following a hot summer can be colder and snowier than average and then just the opposite with cold summers.

El Nino can tend to produce cool summers and mild winters. Hopefully this one is on the way out- not that I particularly enjoy hot summers though!
