I got a 6 seater hot tub, I got it all set up filled with water. I need some help adding chemicals. Need to shock it and add what ever chemicals. I have a box full of shock, ph up, ph down, bromine tablets, and a few other things. Also have test strips. Can anyone tell what the steps are on doing this. Thanks

We always add bromine base as it fills to start things off. Then let it sit for a day and use the test strips to see where it is at for ph, bromine, mineral content and adjust accordingly which is usually 1/3 cup at a time for any of these chemicals.
We use a bromine tablet floater that is adjustable to get the right bromine amount in the tub.
The key is to let the tub set for at least a day after making any chemical adjustments otherwise you will be fighting highs and lows all the time.

I have a motel with an 8 person tub, here's what I do (in order):
fill and bring up to temp, no higher than 105
Add Bromine to test level of 10-14
Check alkalinity to level 90-130, use muratic acid (BE CAREFUL!) to lower
Once alkalinity is set measure ph and add up or down to level 7.6 (7.2-7.8)

On a maintenance basis (no fill) in order:
Check temp 104
check bromine to 10-14
check ph to 7.2-7.8
Check alkalinity to 90-130

In general, alkalinity should not vary much when the tub is filled and going, so not much use for acid after the fill. Remember, the acid causes ph to plummet, so use the ph up and down to maintain the pool during regular usage (mostly ph down). As you use the tub the bromine will fall and the ph will rise.

Note that my pool is commercial, not a home pool, and I do things this way because I cannot let it sit, it has to be ready every day at 9AM and stay ready to 9PM. Also, it is 1500 gallons, so I rarely get in the up/down battle.

Also, watch for foam on the surface, this indicates highly used water that should be changed, or you can get foam away to treat it.

Thanks everyone. I would think once everthing is in place, its fairly easy to maintain. How often should I check the levals?

I use Nature 2 it works great all I have to do is add a chemical that takes out the iron to get the PH down you may not need it depending on the water in your area. After the tub gets up to temp you add a cup of shock to activate the nature 2 than 1 table spoon of cholrine after each use. NO Smell no stink no harsh chemicals you may also need an ozonater to keep everything safe. I check it about 2 times a week and have not had any problems.
