I have a motel with an 8 person tub, here's what I do (in order):
fill and bring up to temp, no higher than 105
Add Bromine to test level of 10-14
Check alkalinity to level 90-130, use muratic acid (BE CAREFUL!) to lower
Once alkalinity is set measure ph and add up or down to level 7.6 (7.2-7.8)
On a maintenance basis (no fill) in order:
Check temp 104
check bromine to 10-14
check ph to 7.2-7.8
Check alkalinity to 90-130
In general, alkalinity should not vary much when the tub is filled and going, so not much use for acid after the fill. Remember, the acid causes ph to plummet, so use the ph up and down to maintain the pool during regular usage (mostly ph down). As you use the tub the bromine will fall and the ph will rise.
Note that my pool is commercial, not a home pool, and I do things this way because I cannot let it sit, it has to be ready every day at 9AM and stay ready to 9PM. Also, it is 1500 gallons, so I rarely get in the up/down battle.
Also, watch for foam on the surface, this indicates highly used water that should be changed, or you can get foam away to treat it.
