Does anyone know if there is a alternate route, this looks to be the only trail across the water according the the maps. (besides trailering it of course or if the water freezes enough)

Nope, no other option, unless you can haul it across the canal on a barge!

Michigan Snowmobile Regulations

Michigan Snowmobile Regulations
Legal Definition of a Snowmobile:

"Snowmobile" means any motor-driven vehicle designed for travel primarily on snow or ice of a type that utilizes sled-type runners or skis, an endless belt tread, or any combination of these or other similar means of contact with the surface upon which it is operated, but is not a vehicle that must be registered under the Michigan vehicle code, 1949 PA 300, MCL 257.1 to 257.923.

A snowmobile may operate on a public highway under the following conditions:

A snowmobile may be operated on the right-of-way of a public highway (except a limited-access highway) if it is operated at the extreme right of the open portion of the right-of-way and with the flow of traffic on the highway. Snowmobiles operated on a road right-of-way must travel in single file and shall not be operated abreast except when overtaking or passing another snowmobile.
A snowmobile may be operated on the roadway or shoulder when necessary to cross a bridge or culvert if the snowmobile is brought to a complete stop before entering onto the roadway or shoulder and the operator yields the right-of-way to any approaching motor vehicle on the highway.

This may be a great opportunity for a local with on open trailer and a crew cab? Offer rides across for a fair fee, everybody wins until it is down for the winter.

There must be more to this one...why do you have a lift bridge and not operate it?

The true Lake Superior shipping season ends mid January and has been so for basically ever. The end is determined when the Soo locks freeze and cannot operate any longer.

Seems to me the one or two times a day/week the coast guard needs to traverse the canal, they could get the bridge lifted.

Seems to me to be an opportunity to trailer sleds back and forth for some enterprising young person. Easy money....imo.

Talked to Michigan Sheriff and Dnr in South Range today (few miles south of Houghton). Bridge will be lowered and prepared for snowmobiling after 12/15. Until then if you really had to it is legal to use the upper portion of the bridge, but it's not recommended...
