Houghton to Baraga via Chassell

Did they ever resolve the trail issue between Houghton and Chassell? Heading up in a few weeks and we were thinking of heading to Big Bay from Houghton since it’s been a while. Last go around we ended up taking the Portage but trying to avoid that if possible. Thx!

No groomed trail between Houghton and Chassell. Either the lake or ditch bang from Painesdale to Chassell.

you can take the bike path (or whatever type of path it is)from the super 8 to chassell. it runs right along 41 and comes out at the gas station right across from greenlight

That is correct it is owned by the DNR so you can ride on it. However it is not groomed or signed. Living in Chassell I know that there are some people that tend to plow up banks where the trail crosses their driveway, so travel with caution.

"whatever type of path it is": It is the the old railroad grade.

What he said. What's more, there are more than 60 such crossings in the ≈8 miles between 5th Street in Chassell and the Super 8 on East Lakeshore Drive, and most with (plowed) snowbanks on either side. You like "moguls"? Color that "brutal".

I wouldn't recommend riding the Chassell-Painesdale Road. The first mile or so is a pretty steep grade, and is often almost a freeway, with heavy traffic including logging trucks, all trying to avoid running through the MTU Campus on US-41. They typically plow that road with a vengeance too. Furthermore, you won't be able to ride entirely off-road (on the right-of-way) either, as there are a number of streams/culverts that cross the road.

FWIW: Some years ago the Greenlight Resort/Bar in Chassell used to have a map showing a recommended route from there to Painesdale via (mostly) back roads south of C-P road (Creamery Road/Worham Road/Fishes Road?), then possibly hooking up with C-P road somewhere west of Paradise Road/Pike River Road?

Yes, Creamery to Worham to Fishes to Chassell Painesdale is the best route however it is easy to get turned around back there for anyone who is not familiar with the area. I use that route to get from My house in Downtown Chassell to get to trail 3 BN trail on my quad all the time. Just please remember to be respectful of private property.

OH YEAH, LET'S GET INTO IT ABOUT SUPER 8 ACCESS TO TRAIL 3; IT TOTALLY SUCKS AND DON'T TELL ME IT CAN'T BE GROOMED, FFFF THAT!

Stayed at Super 8 for 4 days last week and HATE HATE HATE THE ACCESS to trails 3. The moguls with sharp tipped tops are brutal on the sled not to mention the rider.

We took the Painsdale-Chassel Road option on Saturday 1/13. It wasn't bad at all. If you are used to riding ditches in Illinois it will be like being back home. Easy enough to get up on the banks. The snow was decent from Chassel to Baraga. Certainly ride-able and will only get better with any new snow.

when will the canal be ready to ride from the bridge to chassell
(i know its not safe ) i dont see any tracks yet
I saw snowmobiles all over the Portage this weekend (even under the bridge, which is never safe). The few glances possible at Portage Lake between Chassell and Houghton have shown tracks for at least the past week.
