Hello,

We are coming up this week. My questions is.... Can you take the Valley Snow Drifters trail to Dreamland and go up to trail 122 and then turn left on 122 to get back on trail 3 to get to Calumet/Copper Harbor? Does this serve as a "bypass" for the washed out trail 3 area? OR if we plan to go to Copper Harbor from Houghton, do we have to take trail 17?

I can't say definitively that the club trail has been marked yet or not. Ice conditions were not very good due to the "milder" temps that we had. There is no real "bypass" per say, but the routes asked about would be a way to get to Calumet & CH. All you have to remember is Trail 3 from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden is a no-go, however, the trail is groomed from Hancock to Dollar Bay. Bring extra warm wear, high temps lately have been in the negative numbers & look to stay that way for the next 5-10 days. Last night at approximately 9:30p temp dropped from our high of -5 to -22! Currently -8. Stay warm.-Mezz

Yes, you can.

The Valley Snowdrifters club from Dollar Bay to Dreamland and then up to Lake Linden is open, including the tree line across Torch Bay. As a bonus, both trails from Dreamland north are open this year, so you can either take the lower trail (the one that has been open every year) to 122 to Lake Linden, or the upper trail to 122 and will be closer to Gay. Be sure to stop into the Dreamland Motel for a warm up and refreshment and donate to their efforts!

Hello John,
As great as it sounds, am I correct that the Dreamland trail does NOT get groomed?
I tried it once a few years back mid-week and it was washboarded out.

Respectfully, Frank

It does get groomed. The club uses an inclosed SxS with a drag. I am not sure if it gets a daily groom like the trails KTS maintains, but they have some new blood in the club and are way more active with their grooming than in the past. Plus, they know their trails are being used as an alternative to the closed section between $ Bay and Lake Linden, so are putting a lot of effort into their trails.

I recommend checking out the dreamland trail. Wife and i were up early last week and didn’t really wanna take 17 up and back so we took 3 up to the dreamland trail which we had never been on before and it was great! Little more narrow and almost tunnel like but was freshly groomed, plenty of snow and didn’t meet one sled. I would certainly ride it again.
