How often should you grease your trailer wheel bearings?

I'm just curious how often other guys grease their wheel bearings. I've been in the habit of doing it before every long trip we go on, which is about 600 miles round trip. They never need very much but I always get nervous if I don't give them all a couple shots before I go. Am I over doing it? Does anyone know of any recommendations from manufactures?

No your not overdoing it, better safe the sorry! The general rule is 1000 miles. However, the weight hauled each time plays a big role in wear, so checking each trip is a good plan IMO

I will give my bearings two pumps of grease before a big trip, and then another two pumps as soon as the truck and trailer is back home again. I have three dexter easy lube axels on my trailer so the back bearing gets the grease first, then it comes out to the front bearing. But I have heard guys blowing the back seal out if they over grease. (not sure what axels they had though) As long as you see some fresh grease when you take the dust cover/cap off you should be alright. If you don't see any give it a few more pumps next time.

I give my easy lube axle fittings a few pumps each, a few times a season. Sometimes you can tell when you need more grease if you feel the area near the bearing getting excessively warm when you stop for gas.

No your not over doing it, I do the same thing have an 05 karavan 3 place double axel and have never had to replace a bearing yet !

I agree but, never had a bearing get warm.

Never hurts to give 'em a squirt.

That's what I go by.

Thanks guys, it's good to know I'm not over thinking it. I've never had one go bad, but once in a while I'll see or hear of someone that has one go out. That would sure be a good way to ruin a trip. Like you guys said, better safe than sorry!
