O.k. here is my plan; I am taking the family to Hasting for there snow show on the weekend of the 9th of Oct. We are going to leave there and go the Gaylord for the night. Wake up Sunday morning and head to Tahquamenon falls, over to Picture rocks and then down to Manistique for Sunday night. Wake up Monday morning and head home to the south side of the state where we live. Am I planning to much or not enough??. I know when the snow fly’s it take me about 9 hour to get to Munising from my house only stopping for gas so I thought if I break it up it will give us time to see the leaves. One of my main questions is when I go from the falls to picture rock what would be a good way to go to see the leaves. I would think avoiding 28 would be the best, would like to see some “hills” to see the rolling view if we could. Any help would be great for the only time I really spend in the upper is with snow on the ground.

YOU COULD TURN NORTH AT SENEY AND GO UP TO GRAND MARIS, BUT YOU WOULD HAVE TO COME BACK DOWN TO SENEY AGAIN FOR PAVED ROAD.

That would be Oswald's Bear Ranch. Wife and I were there Sunday Sep. 20th. Great place.
However they close down for the season on September 30.
As for the route from T-Falls to Pictured Rocks,
if it were me and I wasn't worried about how late I got into Manistique this would be my route fm the Falls:
(All mileage is approximate)
1. Head west on 123 to CR-500 and turn north. Follow 500 to 414. (~ 6 mi)
2. 414 will take you to Pine Stump Junction.(~16 mi)
3. At Pine Stump, Turn North onto H-37 and follow it to Muskallonge Lake. (~8 mi)
4. At M-Lake H-37 turns into H-58, follow it West into AND through Grand Marais.(~18 mi)
5. H-58 "mainly" travels the boundaries of Pictured Rocks N.L. There are several "side-roads" into the area, pick one.
6. Once I've seen enough of the lakeshore, continue South & West on H-58 through Melstrand and turn South on H-15 heading to Shingleton.
7. From Shingleton head south on M-94 into Manistique. (Shingleton - Manistique = 43 miles).
But hey that's only MHO...just travelin' the backwoods....boy does it look different from the winter...any day spent in 'da Yoop is better than anything else.

That's the kind of stuff I was lookin for micro. Any other sugestions?? Time wise I just want to "Sunday drive" it for lack of better terms. Got a boy that this will probably be the last family vac he will have with us and a 5 yr old that I know will love the view. All she does is color pictures of trees and plays the piano sings and dances (did I mention she sings and dances) [anyone catch that]

Tuck a MI Atlas & Gazetter under the seat. All the Roads paved or not inc the ones above are clearly shown in detail and you will need it cause there will be no signs at a fork in the road saying turn here. I have found some great lookouts and other places of interest and scenery this way while traveling back roads.
