"Harvest" brought up the Red Light Rally in Hurley from the late 90's and got me thinking about seeing the band "Broken Man" at the biker bar in Hurley, WI back in the late 90's early 2000's.

Anyone remember the name of the bar back then? I think it's called "Harley"s today. The owner would start up his Harley in the bar and do a burnout and smoke the entire bar up, seemed cool at the time.

Anyone remember the band Broken Man? They could cover "Alice in Chains" to a tee!

The good old days we usually went to the Iron Horse where the women were as big as horses. A lot of late nights getting back to St Germain at 4 or 5 am. Looks like we need to stop in Hurley our next ride Fuji (If they get snow)

Cool, let the snow guide us.

I wish you all the luck in the world with this! We have been chasing the "good old days" up there for at least 10 years. Let me know if you find it. Its just not the same as the late 90's early 2000's. They will get snow though, just a matter of when.

Looking for that fountain of youth, why do you think half of us are still riding? Makes us feel young.

Back in the 80s and 90s we used to see the 'old' guys at the various pitstops we visited in Wisc. We wondered how they could be having any fun. After all they were OLD. Now we are the old guys. But somehow we still have fun on sleds. No more 4 in the morning 150 miles to home nights. No more blowing up 3 sleds on one ride. No more looking for lost buddies for 3 hours. No more launching sleds in to the back window of the pickup while loading the trailer. No more going in to a bar for 3 hours with 7 guys and paying $700 to settle up. It was fun while it lasted. But it is still fun. Just different.

Right on.
It sure is nice with sleds and grooming improving immensely.

Still trying to keep my sled out of the truck back window though.

Sounds like my crew back in the late nineties and early 2000's. We liked having fun! We weren't destructive or rude but just wanted to have a good time with everyone. I still to this day wonder why we would stay in Minocqua but always rode to Hurley? Why didn't we go to Hurley to stay? I guess we did end up at The Whale so it gave us something when we got back!! I remember one night heading back down trail 17 and we came up on this dude walking. He said he was on the back with his buddy and fell off in which his buddy kept going. So, we gave him a lift to Mercer and sure enough there are his buds in the next pub. We went in with him to see what would happened and he just lit them up! They just laughed at him and they went back and forth which was pretty entertaining. Needless to say I would of found new buds...….

I agree, I still have a great time today with a new friends and hope to stay sledding until I can't walk or talk anymore! Love the power and comfort of today's machines which takes to backwoods scenery that you normally only see in pictures. And most of all, I appreciate it more than ever!

More riding sleds and less driving the truck was my philosophy back then. Now, it is drive all the way up to Houghton or Munising, stay longer and ride better trails mid-week.

Good story from about 1998, 5 guys riding south out of Hurley at 2:30AM on the Grade towards the cabin in Mercer and the last guy drives off the Grade at 50 MPH down about 20 feet into a gully in February.
How long did it take 4 guys to find the 5th guy and pull sled out of ditch? Felt like hours but really about 45 minutes. That guy no longer hangs with us.

It's funny, I think about that all the time. Years ago, there were a LOT of pretty old guys that rode sleds. I just don't see that anymore. Considering how much better the sleds are today, you would think that more older guys would ride. This hobby is interesting in that it always seems to be changing.

Being that I have two younger kids and every free minute counts, my motto in the later years has been"less drive time, more ride time". I do try to find the best conditions as close as possible but will go where I have to in which I've been to the UP already this year so whatever it takes too goes into account. And yes, midweek is best! :cool2:

Looking like you're the only one that remembers this band???? There was a local band here near Madison, on Lake Wisconsin, about that timeframe that rocked it out on the weekends that I'll always remember called the Wizenhiemers (Sp?) If you're Packer fan (I'm not) you may have heard one of their songs "Go you Packers, Go Go". Besides that song they were a great time! I'll try a link...….

Anyway, bring on the dang snow already!

Back in the 80's i met some friends from my home town at the bell Chalet for a drink. They where staying in mercer and I was at our house in Hurley. In the early morning hours left the bell to head home they went left on the Iron Horse seemed odd at the time to me but I figured they knew which way to go.Anyway they ended up at the frontier bar before they had realized Mercer was the "other direction" OOPS their return to mercer was'nt until after sunrise!!

Freekin classic.
The trail was mostly straight back then before all the land issues and re-routes.

No swearing at the Frontier Bar, ya hear! A small price to pay for decent chili when you are freezing cold.

Back in the day I knew things were bad when I started hallucinating on the trail from lack of sleep, too many miles and too much huffed 2-stroke.
Also ran out of gas a lot more back then which made things interesting.
And your right now that i think about it i do see less older folks and less kids.....people are putting off marriage/kids at an alarming rate these days and maybe the 20-30 year olds have cash and time to make these trips more than ever before.
