I live on a channel that goes out to Pistakee lake . South of the RT.12 bridge . Ice just started to freeze last week. I love to ride but the lakes are not safe yet. Maybe a week with these cold temps. I have lived out here for alot of years. Every year the ice is different. I have friends on local F.D. dept. Please wait ,I dread friends having to risk their lives because someone couldn't wait. I did hear and see a couple sleds out tonite.. Just wait, it will freeze up soon. Water levels down also making currents in places that normally would freeze.

X2 I live on Lake Marie and have for 7 years, before that I lived on Channel Lake and every year the chain freezes different depending on the water levels. This year in the middle of Lake Marie basically straight out from the Sand Bar (the bar) there was a spot the size of two foot ball fields that just froze over Tuesday this area is the deeper part of Lake Marie, the past 6 years off of the point it froze last much different this year. Route 12 just going into Pistakee just froze this week also.
I have seen many people out ripping around but I would wait it is not worth it especially if you are not familiar with the chain. I drove by the river last Sunday at HWY 50 and Bridgeport, by 173 and that was all wide open.
I would be willing to bet there will be many people out there this weekend but I will not be one of them. Ride safe.

i went out wed night. lots of slush the port channel is open west side of grass lake was frozen. went to choppers and nac. things should be frozen by now.

Any chance you will be able to get to the lakes from the oar this weekend?

As of yesterday no it was still open. It should lock up but will most likely only be a few inches thick. I know a few guys going out tomorrow and they will rip it no matter what. I really want to take river down to snuggery myself this weekend but I am not willing to risk swimming. You could leave in the morning and come home and it be open it is risky at best no matter what.

I think it was 3 winters ago we took it to snuggery hugged the shore as it was open thru the curves in the middle after we left snuggery on our way back to the lakes 3 sleds went down because they went thru the middle of the S curve we stayed with them until rescue arrived and one of my buddies actually feel thru walking trying to help.

In my opinion just not worth it.

We pretty much have been riding everywhere else. Should be a busy weekend out there as long as it does not rain.

Still quite a few open spots around the Chapel Hill / Johnsburg bridge as of yesterday. There might be some freezing over today/tonight but I wouldn't trust it.

Rode from Fox River Grove up to Johnsburg bridge yesterday. From FRG to Mchenry was lot of slush. Never in my 35 years of riding that river seen so much slush. From Mchenry to Johnsburg was actually pretty good. After this warmup really don't see the river staying frozen especially north of Mchenry. Did see tracks going north of Johnsburg as well but didn't ride it.

Few Wisconsin River is already starting to come over the banks by the dells. Flooding will happen with any more rain in n. IL. So glad I moved off the river.

Withn the rapid melt down, no rain needed for flooding to happen down here. It's coming!
