Did not know this little tidbit.
"Portage Lake Lift Bridge was built in 1959. This is the heaviest aerial lift bridge in the world. "

Also, where is the Victoria dam by Rockland?

Well worth the read. Very interesting.

Take note that on page 7 of Cannonshots posts is a map of the abanded railroad cuts that a member was looking for earlier this season. There is also a picture.

The Victoria Dam is located about 4 miles out side of Rockland. When you come into Rockland going North on 45 at the the intersection right before Henry's take a left and just follow the road all the way down. There will be a couple turns off of the road but don't turn just go straight all the way down. Was just down there the other day and the water coming over the damn is all froze. Was quite pretty to see.

I see that Elm turns into Victoria Dam Road. Is it possible to get out there on sleds legally? Do you see the dam from the road?

BTW, I am still paroozing that thread. Great job on the history and photos.

i have to say, reading this (and i have quite a few pages to go) is very interesting. I'll be up in the UP (Goegebic, Porkies) next week. Knowing more about the history of the area make the expeireince neater for me.

PS. whoever this guy is, he has too much time on his hands. and i'm thankful he has it.

Yes it is. Like I said we were there just a few days ago on sled. The trail will run into Victoria road and run the road for a ways then back on the trail and back out to the road and take the road from there all way down. If and when you get to Rockland give us a call 906-886-2940 and we can get you a map.

I'm thankful too. We have been riding up there for years. I learned more on that single thread than I had over years of riding up there.

I had no idea there was so much history throughout the area. George Gipp was from Laurium, who knew? We went up this summer for the first time(during summer) and things are easier to explore with leaves in the trees.;)

I did not realize you went out there on the sleds. Thanks for the info, and it would be good to chat.
Thanks for sharing this favoritos. I love reading and viewing the history. I'm about 1/3 way thru.

It takes quite a bit of time to absorb all the history. This one little thread gives a lot of information.

Thank you for the offer.

Let's see how the snow holds for the next week.
There is a lot of history in the area. Much more than I ever realized. That was the reasoning behind the thread title.

The awesome people that we meet are another one of the "incredible" things about the area.

I was thinking about that thread and all the mining mentioned through the history of the U.P. I kept thinking that there must be a lot of holes still left in the ground. It seems there must be some truth to that thinking according to John's last journal.

It sounds like the next round of mining is not too far down the road. New technology will not be leaving holes around this time.

There are several mine shafts in the Rockland area. There is also a cave that somebody actually lived in up until sometime in the 70's. There are still some of the old mining houses down in Victoria. There is also going to be and Opera this summer of the mining strike that happened I believe in 1906 and there was some killed in gunfire. It is going to be performed at the Roza Center in Houghton. There is a very nice and informational museum in Rockland. If and when anyone gets to Rockland and would like to see some these sites please let us know and we would be very happy to show you. Cannonshot's "Big Bike Solo in the Western UP" is quite an amazing piece of work. I just wonder if there aren't issues of copyright infringement there as well, as I have seen many of those photos quite a while ago on various other sites.

Another great site for extensive history of the Western UP: The late Kevin Musser's Copper Range Railroad. It's all that and so much more; you can spend hours perusing all of the UP history links.
