Ipad Or Something Else?

Thinking about buying an Ipad for surfing the net ,buying stuff on line and email on my wifi network. Anything better?

For everything you just mentioned, get a kindle. Pretty inexpensive.
8" kindle is $150 or 10" $229. New Kindles have 16 or 32 gb but add a microSD card for up to 128 GB of additional storage!
Have had 8.9" HDX Kindle for 2 years and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately something fried 2 weeks ago and it's not repairable.
Used mine for everything, email, surfing, buying on amazon, movies, only time I would use desktop is for banking. Be looking at a new one this week.

don't know about cable tv. but I know people in cyber security and they have shown me that in under 10 min they can watch me through my lap top knowing nothing but my e mail even with lap top in hibernation.oh and this is fully under the influence prob much faster when not loaded .they tell me all U have to do is open picture and in a month check back in and grab all your security key strokes. U are pretty much just 1 a hole away from a major financial headache.

I NEVER open attachments unless I know who sent it, and even then only if I'm expecting something. I don't even open emails unless I know the sender. My father in law likes to forward jokes and stuff like that to me. I never open the attachments, and if I know its a forwarded joke thing I usually just delete it without opening, cuz I never know where he got it from. I've missed a couple of communications from him because of that. But i keep telling him I just delete that stuff.

Blocking Windoze 10 updates!

I used one PC in our home as a guinea pig about two months ago. Had the same "free update to Win10" prompts. Decided that after hearing after early positive reviews to give it a try. All was good until an update came out last Tuesday AM. Teh PC was rendered unusable.

Reinstalled Win10 and after that same update on Wednesday (no way to stop updates in Win10) same thing. I gave up and went back to Win7. …

A long time reliable and trustworthy friend/former colleague, a hardware/system configuration wizard that was trying Windows 10 and got totally fed up with it sent this to me. Apparently he has had quite enough of Windows 10.

From Ultimate Outsider, (click →) "Using GWX Control Panel (formerly GWX Stopper) to Permanently Remove the 'Get Windows 10' Icon". (and more) quote:
Using GWX Control Panel (formerly GWX Stopper) to Permanently Remove the 'Get Windows 10' Icon
GWX Control Panel (previously named GWX Stopper) is a free program that you can use to do the following on Windows 7 and Windows 8:

Remove the 'Get Windows 10' icon that appears in your notification area.

Prevent your Windows Update control panel from upgrading your computer to Windows 10.

Prevent your computer from secretly downloading Windows 10 installation files.

Detect and remove the hidden Windows 10 installation files if they're already on your PC.

'GWX Control Panel really works, is safe and easy to use, and gives you the option to re-enable the icon and upgrade notifications if you're ever ready to move forward with Windows 10.

UPDATE (November 1, 2015): Due to popular demand, version 1.5 of the program now includes the ability to delete the hidden Windows 10 installation folders (Windows.~BT and Windows.~WS). There are a few other features intended to improve the user experience and assist tech support staff who use GWX Control Panel to remotely help customers. There was a LOT of under-the-hood work done in this release- please let me know in the comments or on the Ultimate Outsider Facebook page if you see unexpected behavior."

I haven't tried this, and don't know anything about it that's not said right there, but you might want to check it out.
I certainly am considering using it.

I'm not sure on the price, but I beleive it up there with iPads?

But my question is, doesn't the Surface pro run Windows OS? The Surface is a Microsoft product after all.

The surface is a full blown pc. You use the docking station and can connect all the monitor you want. Keyboard and mouse of your choosing too.
It does run in WIN 10. It is also an awesome tablet. Its price compared to ipad is not comparing apples to apples. The surface is sooo much more.

Correct but with a simply unplug of the power cord its back to an ipad size tablet and more powerful than most desktops. I finally got rid of my Dell XPS 700 I've had for 10 years.

Two years ago I went with a Surface 2, it has completely replaced my desktop computer and serves almost every need. I still have an old laptop to connect some older devices like Dynojet Power vision and the RoadTech Zumo when either need an update. They were no compatible with the Surface. I love the speed, and the fact there is no bloatware coming through the Surface II. Came with MS Office so I can still use for most everything I use a computer for. It has an RT Windows so does not get the ver 10, and I am glad it doesn't. To me Windows 10 is saying I want a smart phone. Oh I already have one of those :) Oh forgot to say, I have wireless keyboard, Mouse, and Monitor. Don't even need a docking station. The Surface has built in projection option and if your monitor does not have capability you can get a device called PUSH2TV. Our TV also has capability of allowing projection, but the wife hates when I do that and take up her time watching cooking shows.

I plan to do the same. (Surface pro 4 i7 win10)Yes it is a great tablet. But if just looking for a tablet there are much less expensive options out there.
The new Microsoft phones running Win10 can also be considered a tablet but are also full blown pc running the same apps like MS Office etc.

If a simple stupid tablet is all you want, just make sure what ever you get has at least 32 gb memory or is expandable via slot.

After experiencing firsthand the boondogle that is going on with the latest Win10 update I doo have a hard time recommending anything with a Windows operating system....or anything even related to Microsoft!

They NEVER seem to get transitions right the 1st try.......8.0 -> 8.1 was a genuine fiasco too.

My limited experience with iPads (friends, not mine) is they tend to be a tad "delicate".......I'm always being asked to "look at" friends' stuff that is not working, or at least not correctly......something about my nearly 4 decades in the IT field.......usually there is some impact (floor. etc.) involved.......just my experience......

Totally unrelated: take a WAG (Wild A$$ed Guess) who is training to volunteer grooming this winter for the new organization that is in charge of Munising's trail system?.........Go ahead, guess! I insist.......<G>

Also off subject: You heard of the guy that says to his wife "Pass the newspaper will you"......she says "Oh you are SO behind the times.....Here, use my tablet".........He says "Frippin spider never knew what hit him"............
