I am wanting to get up to date with my cell phone. I have been using nextel for the last 8 years, and I'm fed up with no signal in the up. Do any of you use a iphone in the up. How is the reception. Any advise between the 3gs or the newer 4 model.

My iphone has been with me the last 3 years to the UP. I have seen better coverage than any other service I had in the past.

The 3g 4g deal. I still have the 3g because in my area and I guarantee in the UP, you won't have the high speed access anyway. The phone is only as good as the speed at which you get service. I don't even turn on the 3g access on my phone unless I am into MSP or similar sized towns.

I assume you mean the 3rd Generation (like 3gs) and 4th Generation, not 3g-4g speed.

Marquette and Houghton will be 3g with at&t sometime this year. I think Verizon already is.

Confluzuating!!!! Acronyms and abbrevations.

I'm sold on the iPhone4!

Funny thing... the iPhone4 (mine is of course AT&T) is so very much more than a 'phone'! More like a micro-laptop in functionality, with phone capability thrown in.

I don't really do that much talking on my iP4. In fact I have always preferred using asynchronous communications, like email or text messaging (the latter seems much more direct and personal), mainly 'cuz I absolutely hate phone tag, voice mail and those @%$& 'automated attendants'. Asynchronous messages can be dealt with at one's leisure, with no need to have both parties on the phone at the same time (usually an inconvenient time for one or both)! And you have a written (digital, text) record.

What I like is the iPhone 4's smooth integration and versatility, text messaging & MMS (both unlimited for me), photos, email, web browser, mapping/GPS(!), FaceTime! (the videophone that ma Bell never got to work — but only when using a Wi-Fi connection, either at home or on the road), oh and all at the same time — full multi-processing capability, except when using FaceTime.

I had been having thoughts of replacing my elderly, failing laptop, but after several trips with the iPhone4 — driving to Flagstaff, and flying to LAX for a stay of several days — I discovered that I don't need a new laptop. The iPhone does it all. One less gadget to deal with through airport security, too.

In the middle of a conversation — snap a photo and send it via MMS and/or email —"Is this what you're looking for?" "Okay, I'll ship it out tomorrow."

I luv it!

Oh and I get a much better signal in the cell hole at home than with my old Motorola cell phone. Usually at least three bars out of five. So I am no longer feeling an urge to get an AT&T 3G Microcell (see photo).

We set a lot of customers up with the microcell...and use one ourselves. They are sweet.

I change phones now and then and use my laptop very little anymore. Not a huge fan of the keyboard on the screen...but LOVE voice to text. Use it for most things I do.

I'm getting used to the iP4's 'virtual keyboard'; at least it shows you which key you're on, unless you type/tap like a blue streak. I find I have to deliberately touch the keys with the 'fat pad' of the finger, not the finger tip, or you get the key below the one you intended. It is also a bit easier in landscape mode. Once upon a time I got to be quite speedy with the old Palm 'graffiti', too, so I guess I can get yoosta the iP4 'virtual keyboard'. Practice, practice, practice! :)

Voice to text? Is this an app or a feature of the iPhone4? I have a 3GS. Just curious.

Unless you have a Droid , Droid Eris , Droid X , Droid 2 , Droid 2 Global or Droid Pro..... You have a non Droid. It was the $100,000,000 Advertising campaign under the Droid name (licensed thru Lucas Films) that started the Android Operating phones success. If someone walks into att and asks for a Droid (which they dont have) employee would say yeah right here the Captivate. Its like 3g, 4g, iphone 3gs, & iphone 4 confussion.

Makes me laugh that some employees dont even know the difference.

Oh, I think most of us are very aware. Phones with the Android OS are called Droid much like we might ask for a Band Aid but accept a store brand bandage.

Come to my store and I will use YOUR language even if it is technically wrong. The world does call the Captivated and many others, Droids.

does anybody have any real experience with using the 3gs/4 comparing the two. I know the 4 has more little gadgets, I'm wondering about reception & durability.

With your nextel it was not on the full Sprint Network. I was in the Up last week with people that had Sprint, Verizon and At&t. Sprint worked in the most places along with Verizon. At&t would not work in Paulding where we were staying. Sprint just came out with a smaller android with a key board I might of looked at if I did not have a Blackberry I live very much. Sprint has that $69.99 plan with unlimited data that is hard to beat. I just paid $50 to tether my phone to the internet and it works great from my computer. The $50 is a life time of internet so if it only works for a few months its worth it. Tired of paying 50 for the wifi now it looks like I can get it free.

sprint has been trying to get me to switch to their plan, but sprint has no reception in my hometown. From what I have seen att would have the best coverage for me.

Did you try an actual Sprint phone and not anything with a Nextel if your home town? Nextel/Sprint has a different coverage area.

Voice to text.... What a STUPID concept. The reason for a text is not wanting to talk due to either being in a place where you can't talk at the time or don't want someone else to hear it. Talk to text.... Just make the phone call.

if you really want an iphone, wait till the verizon comes out in feb, verizon has far better service than att in the UP, WI, and everywhere else. My iphone works great in the twin cities but about 10 mi into WI (on hwy 8) coverage is hit or mis at best.

I have an Iphone 3g and get good reception in the UP in most populated areas but it is sketchy in the sticks. I recall standing in a certain part of Lumberjack in Big Bay to get a signal. Some areas (Sidnaw comes to mind) no one gets reception. UP is much better now since ATT associated with the local cell network.

I have an original iPhone3 (not even 3gs). I've had it two years and it's been great. I have 2 little kids that like to play on it (they have a memory game, bubble snap, etc- It's kind of scary how quickly my 2 yr old figured out how to use my phone). Anyway- it's been thrown down the stairs, dropped, squished, and spilled on. I actually dropped it in a puddle once. The sound went out on it for a day. I was heartbroken. 48 hours later, it came back to life and works just as it did the day I bought it. I've used it in the UP. We actually pulled it out somewhere just south of BigBay at a trail intersection that we couldn't match up to the map. Used the map functionality to get our exact lat/long- and found we were not at the intersection we thought. I was pretty impressed it picked us up in the middle of nowhere. That being said, there have been pitstops that I haven't been able to get a signal without going outside in the steet out front. I have not had any service/coverage issues with AT&T around my house and through the majority of WI. I also love the phone, and it's the old school. I'm guessing they are coming out with a new one this year, so I'm waiting to see what they have and then I will upgrade (mostly b/c I recently dropped my phone on the sidewalk and it landed 'just right' to crack the screen. Note, it still works completely fine, touch screen even under the crack). My big dilemma is will I switch from at&t to verizon or not. Like I said, I haven't had issues with at&t, but verizon is known for great coverage as well. As far as 3GS vs iPhone4- I haven't used the new one. Big bonus to me, is the video camera. So I'm looking forward to upgrading, just waiting to see what the next phone is.
I know a lot of people who love their droids as well. Most are pretty 'tech' though. I'm not. I found the iPhone extremely easy to use (see earlier comment how my 2 yr old can maneuver and get to the apps she likes).

There are actually a few "sweet" spots in Sidnaw where you can receive coverage with AT&T but they are pretty small. We own a camp there about a mile from the trail and I have to take a little ride to get out but it's do-able in case of an emergency.

Verizon doesn't get better service in the UP, I can tell you that! Ride with a friend who uses our AT&T phones cause his Verizon doesn't work! Has many times & many places!
Buying a new iphone get the 4. My wife has the 3 & I have the 4 & its got little things that are just better & more up to date! There are new AT&T towers firing up in the UP every month or so lately too. Sidnaw area is getting a tower soon too!
