So where I live in Illinois has about 5-6 inches on the ground currently and they are calling for 3-6 more friday night saturday. That means I will be able to legally ride down here in illinois this weekend but where my cabin is in oneida county wisconsin, they have more snow and trails are closed. Is that not the dumbest thing you've ever heard of. Hopefully this year is the last time thats possible. They can have illinois riding I would much rather be in the northwoods, but i'll take what I can get I guess. My throttle thumb is twitching.

I agree. On the positive side, we are off to such a great start it's hard to complain too much, although I sill do! Good snow cover in many places will help take pressure off of the usual places. Now we need the ice and swamps to freeze good.

Not by a long shot. Get educated on the how's and why's of prepping, opening and closing trails and maybe you'll appreciate the fact that you are able to ride anywhere period!

I am educated champ, the only thing holding the club I belong to from opening is the DEER HUNT. I have helped clear downed trees on the trails on opener more than once. And believe me I do appreciate that we have snow this early anywhere, just thought its ironic that I cant ride up north but can here.

You are both correct....We are told lots of things but it really is many things that affect trail opening dates as I'm finding out this year. Just saying trails are closed due to deer hunting is not as simple as it may seem at 1st glance & when you do the deep dive there are many, many reasons for delays. Some very good reasons some not so good reasons but the result is the same.

post from fuzzy, the president of northern trails unlimited on their website.....

12/4/13 4:20 PM If only deer season was over. We are getting snow and really good snow. Unfortunately, trails cannot open before Dec. 18. I know that people are getting itchy, I know I am, but stay off trails. We do not want to lose easements because of a few trespassers. I sure wish we could go out and groom, because this snow is perfect for setting a base. Nancy she said she had seen that NWP was grooming the bearskin/Hiawatha. Good for them to get that set in. Until we can Fuzzy

Then Vilas opens all but Phelps same resident deer in Vilas as anywhere else in WI nothing to do with hunting but what we were 1st told. Just saying do the deep dive peel back the layers & things may not be as simple as your are being lead to believe.

I mean I'm sure its different everywhere. But the sole reason that Northern Trails Unlimited is not open is because of DEER hunt, cant speak for any other club. I personally know fuzzy.

Good to know & not I'm saying anything bad about Fuzzy or anyone else not my style just not always as simple as you think. Not that it will make any difference in the outcome trails still closed & we respect the enforcement & closing statements. Maybe you want to dig deeper maybe not up to you.

HardwaterHoosier, you do know that out of state riders now need a trail permit in IL to ride the trails. Which is the reason I don't ride in Illinois as my sled is registered in WI and they won't sell me a IL trail permit with an IL license.

Last year the cops were waiting on the trails in Northrn IL handing out tickets. In my case it would of been $130.00 ticket for not having my Sled registered in IL with a IL license.

So I trailered to Genoa city and rode North.

IF we get the snow in Illinois its nice to load the trailer up in snow then head to the Up on Tuesday. Maybe I will register my snowmobile this year in Illinois if we get some more snow. I can ride to the I and M canal so its nice 100 mile ride if we have the snow.

You live in Illinois. Register it here AND Wisconsin. No law against that. It's what I do.

I had my 2002 sled registered that way, but when I inquired about my 2011 , IL wanted me to pay the difference in taxes from what I payed in WI when I bought it their.
Nice thing about buying it in WI is the Dealer was able to registered it and print out my Sticker on the spot.

I haven't ridden in IL for at least 5 years as their not much trails anymore and lack of Snow.

If you would have used the word "ironic" in your first post, I would have whole heartedly agreed! Big difference between dumb and ironic. I guess it must make you feel better calling people "champs" and such but I won't go there.

Don't get me started on the tax thing. I may have told the story before. I bought a trailer in Wisconsin and Illinois gave me all kinds of crap about the tax difference. After weeks of going back and forth, I paid them what I owed. Five dollars. Then they gave me plates.
