Is it worth it?

Hey John, we are suppose to come up this Sunday until tuesday and plan on riding houghton to copper harbor. (staying in calumet) We are bringing our wives along so just wondering if it is worth the trip up or if we should head east to Marquette. Any advice would help a lot! Thanks, Jason

Kind of hard for me to say, as my opinion on "if it is worth it" could differ strongly from yours. I can say this, the snow is very thin and I will also add that I have not seen much of the trail system as I have not been out yet as I was away for Christmas and just got back into town yesterday. From what I have seen, Calumet is the best of all areas north of the bridge. They have around 6-8" on the ground and you can see what trails there look like for yourself by checking out the trail cam 2. Up my way, the trails are covered in snow, but that is about it. Very very thin. I heard that down in the towns of Eagle River, Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor, they did not even get the 5" we got last week, so the snow there is even thinner, perhaps almost bare ground, but again, I have not personally seen the areas for myself.

South of the bridge, the snow is better from around Painesdale south to the midway point between Twin Lakes and Mass City. Looked to be around 7-10" down in those areas. But it is more of an island in a sea of low snow and not sure how they would hold up to any considerable traffic.

So I guess if you REALLY LOVED the Keweenaw and just HAD to come up and were willing to bear the conditions and hop from island of better snow to island of better snow, then you might actually be able to enjoy yourself. If you are not willing to make such concessions and are not in serious need of a Keweenaw-fix, then I would say heading east is a much better bet. The snows are still not deep there either, but the deepest snow in the UP seems to be in the Marquette area (12-15") and then 8-14" totals are down in inland areas from Munising east to Grand Marais and Paradise.

Thanks John for the honest reply. We are going to give it a shot and just follow the snow, as this is our only time that we will all be on vacation together. Hopefully that 1 to 4 inches by Sunday 7am will help a little too and if nothing else we will just enjoy the calumet nightlife on new years!
