After many years hitting the western UP trails, our group is changing it up a bit and hitting the trails near Marquette and Ishpeming. We are staying in Ishpeming. Any loops recommended Around 175 miles or so? Can we make it to Pictured Rocks and back? Do the trails go thru the national lakeshore park? Heading up in a few weeks. Any intel on trails and recommended stops is appreciated!

not sure how many miles from there, haven't been in that area for a while and we stayed in munising but Eben ice caves are cool but a bit of a hike on foot, Miners Castle and falls and a bit more of a ride from there Jack Pine (place to eat) and Big Spring well worth seeing. Sorry dont have a map of that area any more but in my opinion all well worth seeing, just be prepared for eben ice caves, unless it has changed you had to park sleds and hike a bit, may be worth seeing of someone else has been there this year yet considering how wet it has been this year, wonder how they are. Again sorry about not having trail numbers or mileage would think Eben and miners castle well within mileage, big spring may be outside your radius but again...worth the stop

If you take trail 8 towards Marquette and then get on 417 it runs right along the lake shore. Just before you get to Marquette you will be on a hi ridge and you can pull over and walk up a short hill about 50 yards and overlook Marquette. The Brownstone Inn is right on trail 417 about 30 miles West of Munising. Once you are closer to the West side of Munising you will intersect trail 8. If you go South and then East on 7/8 and then take trail 7 South you can go down to the Buckhorn which is a great place to eat. http://www.buckhornresort.com/ Like was posted above the Big Bay loop is good also. If you go up there make sure you stop at the Thunder Bay Inn it was built by Henry Ford in 1944.

If you do head over, the route macgyver listed will get you over towards pictured rocks. After you leave Buckhorn head back north on 7 then east on 8 and take that to 422. This runs all the way to pictured rocks. This is the only trail in and out.

Not only that, but the 1959 American courtroom drama crime film Anatomy of a Murder, was filmed at the Thunder Bay Inn (and elsewhere in the UP.)
See (click →) Wikidypedia: Anatomy of a Murder. (Quoted here, in part):

Produced and directed by Otto Preminger and written by Michigan Supreme Court Justice John D. Voelker under the pen name Robert Traver. Voelker based the novel on a 1952 murder case in which he was the defense attorney.

The film stars James Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, Eve Arden, George C. Scott, Arthur O'Connell, Kathryn Grant, Brooks West (Arden's husband), Orson Bean, and Murray Hamilton. The judge was played by Joseph N. Welch, a real-life lawyer famous for dressing down Joseph McCarthy during the Army-McCarthy hearings.

It has a musical score by Duke Ellington, who also appears in the film, and has been described by a law professor as "probably the finest pure trial movie ever made".

Just be advised that trail 8 is a superhighway and the the main east west route that everyone takes. Leave early in the morning and get back past it early or it can get whooped up pretty bad. we stay in Chattam and the ride the area often as my buddy has a place there. coming back towards Chattam after 8 PM from the Buckhorn is usually an adventure depending on your suspension. The big Bay loop is usually great when the snow is good. the loop through republic is nice as well. tight twisty trails, be ready to work..

A nice 200 mile loop is Ishpeming through Republic to Amasa. Rusty saw blade for lunch. head to sidnaw for fuel and head back to Ishpeming on trail 8. Stop at cozy for fish or a burger, then back to Ishpeming.
