The only anecdote I have from personal experience was yrs ago I noticed some red droplets on the snow from my 99 Suburban...mechanic said upper half of transfer case was cracked...GM wanted $1500 for casting of HALF of transfer case...mechanic said "Let me try something"...kept it overnight to let everything get to room temp, cleaned thoroughly, and put JB Weld on it...I only drove it for another 6 or so yrs like that with no issues...
