Jet Skiing the Houghton Portage Canal

Can't wait until winter to ride sleds, so my buddies and I are going to bring some jet skis to Houghton and ride them in the canal. Can anyone give us some ideas, must sees, or stops we should know about? What is the speed limit in there? Hopefully there isn't one! Thanks!

Sounds like fun. I am planning a jet ski ride around grand island this summer.
Have done it on sleds but never in jet skis. Pretty sure I have my buddy talked in to it who happens to own the jet skis.. :)

The only places to stop that I am aware of besides what you have in Houghton/Hancock is whatever you can find in Lake Linden on Torch Lake (you have to park at the park and walk into town, usually Loading Zone), or the Dreamland Resort/Bar on the canal going into Torch Lake. No speed limits, but be sure you have all necessary gear and reg as it is patrolled by the Coast Guard and they do a LOT of checking. There is a nice beach area right where the east end of the canal comes out onto the bay, lots of boaters beach and hang out there. There's a couple locals who troll on this sight that may be able to help you out more. HAVE FUN.

Hey again guys. We did the trip this past weekend. The weather didn't cooperate fully as it was a bit cold (68 and cloudy), but we still had fun. There were 7 of us. We rode out of Houghton to the Northwest out to the big lake which while wasn't too bad, still had big swells outside of the breakwater. There is a nice beach just inside the breakwater which we hung out on for a while. Rode back to Houghton to fill with gas as the little gas stop in Houghton was the only gas stop. Then rode up to Torch lake. We stopped at the rusted out old Quincy mine dredge for some neat pictures, then to Lake Linden. We didn't stop there but checked it out from the water. Then rode back down and stopped at the Dreamland Bar for some good food. Then back to the gas stop. Then rode southeast to the other end. There is a nice beach outside the breakwater that we stopped at. Then back to the gas stop. Then fooled around racing and ripping up the water for a bit. There were almost no other boats or people out probably because of the weather. Closed out the Downtowner bar which was great fun. All in all, we thought it was a good trip, but sure would have preferred sunny and 80 and would have preferred more other recreational boaters to hang out with. I'll try to post a few pics later.
