Just moved to the Kewenaw from Maine.

I mostly grew up in Maine...largely in the County (Aroostook), as its called.

However my wife and I just took the leap and moved to the Keweenaw...specifically Calumet.

We've been here now about a month or so and LOVE it. It reminds us so much of the things we liked about Maine - but sometimes even better. The northern tip of the peninsula actually reminds me of a cross between the Allagash and Acadia National Park. It's astonishing.

I am so giddy and excited about the upcoming winter. Cannot wait for the snow. I'm used to cold...seen roughly -45 to -50 several times in Maine. Seen 7 feet of snow cover on the level, etc...so I think I'm prepared...but who knows.

It's like a christmas present in itself.

Just wanted to introduce myself.

PS - I've been idly daydreaming about this move since 2002 and been reading JohnDee for just about as long.

So happy to have finally made the leap.

Welcome aboard you sound well prepared but you won't see those kind of low temps in the Keewee. What type of work do you do?

I've got a degree in both Biology and English. Going to be attending Tech for my secondary teacher certification. I'm hoping to become a teacher of bio/chem up here in the Keweenaw/UP...and want to make this my home and start a family here.

Thanks for the reply!

That is Awesome, I'm sure your going to LOVE the area. From what I've seen in Maine, you will be very comfortable in your new surroundings. Glad you made the move. Takes guts. Hope you will be a contributing member of the JD board also. Good luck in your studies, and future teaching career.

Although I live in Southern Lower Michigan I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the great State of Michigan.

The area you have chosen as home is a beautiful part of the State. AGAIN WELCOME.....

Welcome aboard the USS Keweenaw, Willh!

Welcome aboard the USS Keweenaw, Willh!

Oh wait … wrong ship!

That's the an aerial view of the USS Kearsarge monument and memorial to our U.S. Veteran's [sic], located in Kearsarge (Photo courtesy of E. Neil Harri and Pasty Central).

Welcome aboard anyway!

We hope that after a stunningly beautiful Fall color season in da Copper Country you'll get a chance to experience a record snow season this year as well; perhaps like the record snowfall shown on the Keweenaw Snow Thermometer.

Maybe something like this: from Pasty.com on Sunday March 1, 2014.

"Tervetuloa lumen pääkaupunki keskilännen!"
(With your degree in English, you're going to get a chance to learn some Yooperese and some Finnglish as well while you're in da Keweenaw!) Enjoy!

Welcome to the neighborhood!

Was that you who I had the pleasure of meeting last week?

-John

I would welcome you also but I'm not lucky enough to live there! So you've done something that a lot of us dream of doing.
Although I will say welcome to the discussion board, and maybe we'll meet someday.

Brent
p.s. put a little more info on your proflle?

Congrats!!!!!!!!! You are living our dream also. We are in our 60's, but have longed to be able to move U.P. there for many years. We still hope that it will happen. All I say is to enjoy it all!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the responses everyone!

Still loving it up here.

Just read John's journal and I cannot believe that I missed the aurora last Friday, etc. That's frustrating, lol...my wife is so excited whenever we see them. I guess I need to look into these aurora forecasts and app John mentioned...

@John: No, I haven't had the opportunity yet to meet/see you, lol. Wouldn't want to make you feel awkward anyways, lol, though I have been excited by the idea of finally seeing you after reading your journals for so long.

Thanks for everything you do.

Welcome to the Yoop! I feel like I know a lot about where you used to live because of my favorite show.
Northwoods Law, they always talk about Aroooooooostoooock County!
I've been to the Swanton area a few times. Have a buddy in Vermont. All nice country around there too.

Anyway, Welcome aboard. Like said above, the best time of year is coming.
Fall and Winter, enjoy them both!
