Keweenaw exploration

We are planning three days based in Twin Lakes or Houghton. Does anyone have suggestions about off-trail riding any where in the Keweenaw? I don't want to go cross-country. Instead we're looking for fire roads, seasonal roads, camp trails, high lines ect. Got any favorite spots or areas? Thanks!

This has come up so many times this year it is getting old very fast. By camp trails I am assuming you mean private property, as peoples camp trails are the road that leads to peoples camps? High lines?? if that is power lines they also are on private property. You can check the thread http://www.johndee.com/vbulletin/sh...us-off-trail-ride-feb-21-23-anybody-have-time.

Also look under http://www.johndee.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?33718-My-Trespass-Story-for-today.... IMO the biggest problem in this day and age with snowmobiling is that anybody can go out and buy a moutain sled or cross over sled and then they want to run all over "off-trail" but they don't want to buy the maps, plat books, gps, to know where they are and if they are on private property. The UP has changed drastically in the last 10-15 years and what once was all owned by logging companys that did not mind if people road through there land because there was only a hand full of off-trail riders now there are hundreds of "off-trail" riders and the land has been sold off and is now plats of private property. So without a lot of time to sit down and look at the maps and plat books and set things up in a gps to guide you to places you can ride the only "legal" way for someone not from the area or willing to do the work is to hire a guide and enjoy your off trail experance in a safe and legal manner.

I'll try to print this slowly so you can understand better. I should have gone into more detail with my original post. First of all we don't want to ride on private property unless the owners are okay with it but that was not my intention anyway. I own property in N. Wis and I don't care if sleds cross over it however someone else may not feel the same. And maybe high lines should not have been included although it seems they get ridden to death. Camp trails could be public roads used get out to an area where private property is located. Did I mention we don't care to go cross country? I happen to love the Keweenaw. I think it is a magical country. I read books and articles about it and the history and it fascinates me. A friend used to live in Calumet and went to Mich Tech and he introduced me to the area. We have been coming up to the peninsula for several years but since we live in Illinois not often enough. Anyway, my idea was just to find some snow covered backroads or paths to explore and maybe discover a lake or scenic vista or interesting place. If this can't be done without paying for a guide then they will remain a mystery. All the trails N of Houghton can be ridden in a day so I thought a few side trips would be fun. I'm sure there are places but they may be hard to find. By the way I think a big problem is when trail riders go too fast for conditions - namely oncoming traffic. That's it.

In twin lakes the logging roads are endless, pick a direction and go explore. stop at Krupps and talk to Jim as he would know any areas to avoid. you could spend all three days in the backcountry without riding the same stuff twice. our general rule for the leader is if you can drive a semi down the logging road go for it, otherwise turnaround and move on to the next one. with all the traffic up there you won't have any problems finding the logging roads off the trails.

Thanks to my fellow Snowmobilers and outdoorsmen for the kind responses and helpful advice. This was my very first post. When I have any successful adventures I will be sure to report them.
